Lachmann, Tischendorf, and Tregelles
We have seen above how Lachmann,
Tischendorf, and Tregelles fell under the influence
of Cardinal Wiseman’s theories. There are more
recent scholars of textual criticism who pass over
these three and leap from Griesbach to Westcott
and Hort, claiming that the two latter simply
carried out the beginnings of classification made by
the former.[34] Nevertheless, since many writers
bid us over and over again to look to Lachmann,
Tischendorf, and Tregelles, -- until we hear of
them morning, noon, and night, -- we would seek
to give these laborious scholars all the praise justly
due them, while we remember that there is a limit
to all good things.
Lachmann’s (1793-1851) bold determination to
throw aside the Received Text and to construct a
new Greek Testament from such manuscripts as he
endorsed according to his own rules, has been the
thing which endeared him to all who give no
weight to the tremendous testimony of 1500 years
of use of the Received Text. Yet Lachmann’s
