The first efforts to secure revision were
cautiously made in 1857 by five clergymen (three
of whom, Ellicott, Moberly, and Humphrey, later
were members of the New Testament Revision
Committee), who put out a “Revised Version of
John’s Gospel.” Bishop Ellicott, who in the future,
was to be chairman of the New Testament Revision
Committee, believed that there were clear tokens of
corruptions in the Authorized Version.[8]
Nevertheless, Ellicott’s utterances, previous to
Revision, revealed how utterly unprepared was the
scholarship of the day to undertake it. Bishop
Coxe, Episcopal, of Western New York, quotes
Ellicott as saying about this time:
“Even critical editors of the stamp of
Tischendorf have apparently not acquired even a
rudimentary knowledge of several of the leading
versions which they conspicuously quote. Nay,
more, in many instances they have positively
misrepresented the very readings which they have
followed, and have allowed themselves to be
misled by Latin translations which, as my notes
