The first efforts to secure revision were<br />

cautiously made in 1857 by five clergymen (three<br />

of whom, Ellicott, Moberly, and Humphrey, later<br />

were members of the New Testament Revision<br />

Committee), who put out a “Revised Version of<br />

John’s Gospel.” Bishop Ellicott, who in the future,<br />

was to be chairman of the New Testament Revision<br />

Committee, believed that there were clear tokens of<br />

corruptions in the <strong>Authorized</strong> Version.[8]<br />

Nevertheless, Ellicott’s utterances, previous to<br />

Revision, revealed how utterly unprepared was the<br />

scholarship of the day to undertake it. Bishop<br />

Coxe, Episcopal, of Western New York, quotes<br />

Ellicott as saying about this time:<br />

“Even critical editors of the stamp of<br />

Tischendorf have apparently not acquired even a<br />

rudimentary knowledge of several of the leading<br />

versions which they conspicuously quote. Nay,<br />

more, in many instances they have positively<br />

misrepresented the very readings which they have<br />

followed, and have allowed themselves to be<br />

misled by Latin translations which, as my notes<br />
