As the influence of the Oxford Movement<br />

crossed the ocean and began to spread in the<br />

United States, Dr. Hort could not refrain from<br />

writing to Westcott:<br />

“A most singular movement is taking place<br />

among the German ‘Reformation’ settled in<br />

America, the center of the Movement being<br />

Mercersburg. The leading man is Dr. Nevin. ... I<br />

can compare him to no one but Newman, and<br />

higher praise it would be difficult to give. I fear he<br />

is fast drifting Romewards.” Easter Eve, 1854.[1]<br />

So wrote from England one who knew. The<br />

“Mercersburg Movement,” or the “Mercersburg<br />

Theology,” made a revolutionary and permanent<br />

change in American Theological colleges and<br />
