such views of a communion (i. e. the Church of<br />

Rome) so ancient, so wide-spreading, so fruitful in<br />

Saints, I answer that I said to myself, ‘I am not<br />

speaking my own words, I am but following almost<br />

a consensus of the divines of my own church.’...<br />

Yet I have reason to fear still, that such language is<br />

to be ascribed, in no small measure, to an<br />

impetuous temper, a hope of approving myself to<br />

persons I respect, and a wish to repel the charge of<br />

Romanism.”[25]<br />

Tract 80 created a widespread stir. The term<br />

“Jesuitical” might have been heard on the lips of<br />

Protestant England everywhere to express what<br />

they considered to be the source of such<br />

arguments.[26] But that stir was insignificant<br />

compared with what was produced when Newman<br />

wrote Tract 90. In fact, if we were to single out any<br />

one outstanding event in the history of this<br />

Romanizing Movement prior to the Revision of the<br />

<strong>Bible</strong> in 1870, we would point to Tract 90 as that<br />
