Energy and Forces HOW THINGS MOVE STEM Project Teacher Notes STEM Project: Create a racetrack for a toy sports car and a toy fire engine to roll down at the same time. Create a video describing the shape, size and weight of each vehicle and showing which vehicle moved faster/slower and which travelled further. Estimated duration: 4 weeks 1. Introduce the project • Read the problem on page 66 to pupils. • Watch the online video at showing how to create a cardboard racetrack. • As a class, discuss pupils' prior knowledge of how objects move and how the size, shape and weight of objects affect how they roll. • Read the task and the important information on page 66 to pupils. 2. Find out information • Provide time for pupils to find out information about toy racetracks and toy vehicles. —— Find online images of homemade cardboard racetracks and racetracks that can be purchased in toy shops. —— Provide a selection of non-fiction and fiction texts for pupils to look at, ensuring that only factual information is transferred. —— Conduct experiments with different types of ramps to see which ramp allows the most force to push the objects into motion. 3. Design, plan and manage resources • Pupils plan their racetrack and create a diagram of it, labelling the materials that will be used to create each part. • Pupils collect the materials necessary. Remind pupils about resource management, conserving resources and ensuring that resources are shared. 4. Create • Pupils choose which materials they will use to make each part of the racetrack. • Pupils create their racetrack according to their diagram. 5. Evaluate and refine • Pupils evaluate their racetrack to ensure that all the criteria on page 66 is included. • Pupils make any adjustments necessary to their designed product. 6. Communicate • Pupils create a video of their racetrack using a tablet computer application or a digital camera, describing the size, shape and weight of each vehicle and showing which vehicle moved faster/slower and which travelled further. • Display the racetracks and the videos around the classroom and conduct a gallery walk for pupils to view other groups' designs and videos. • Pupils complete the self-assessment of how well they participated and cooperated within the group.
