Unit Overview Materials MATERIALS HAVE PROPERTIES Objects are made of materials that have observable properties and characteristics. Lesson 1 What are objects made from? Lesson 2 What do objects that are made from wood, glass, metal and rubber look, smell and feel like? Lesson 3 What do objects that are made from paper, cardboard or plastic look, smell and feel like? Lesson 4 What do objects that are made from different fabrics look, smell and feel like? Lesson 5 What types of materials are used to make houses? To determine pupils' prior knowledge, engage them in various guided sorting activities to group a set of objects by colour, then by size, then by the materials they think the objects are made from. Pupils reflect on their predictions by comparing their groups to eight types of materials—wood, glass, plastic, metal, paper, rubber, fabric and ceramic. Pupils sort given objects into four groups to predict which material they are made from—wood, glass, metal or rubber. Pupils are then introduced to some basic observable properties that materials have. Pupils use their senses to describe objects made from wood, glass, metal and rubber before engaging with an interactive game to reflect on their learning. Pupils scan QR codes using tablet computers to predict the types of materials used to build houses around the world. They then watch a video explaining the different types of houses around the world and the materials they are made from. Pupils compare their predictions to the information provided in the video. Viewing sample Pupils engage with an interactive activity to choose clothing appropriate for different weather conditions—hot, cold or wet. Pupils investigate the properties of cotton, wool, leather, silk and plastic and how each type of material is used to make clothing for different purposes. They list which types of materials are used for building homes and making clothes. 94-96 STEM Project Make a Sailboat that can Float 72 Science: A STEM APPROACH Pupils create a sailboat that can float for one minute. They must ensure they use a different material for each part—the hull, the deck, the mast, the sails and the rigging.
