HOLLY CLACY FOUNDATION
We are thrilled to be able to
tell you that our initiative to
create a garden area at the top
of what is known as ‘Radar Hill’
is almost ready to launch!!
Firstly, the new owners of the
land, ‘Supported Business’ have
granted the Foundation a 50
year lease.
THE VILLAGE CHIPPY
OPEN
Essex County Council has also
agreed a further 10 x 7 metre
area for us to create this new
garden area. The permissive
footpath and licence for this all
to move forward, is now in the
final stage.
It has been our intention from the beginning to create a
peaceful rest area for the community to use. With the funds so
generously donated by the local community this year, we have
commissioned, and purchased, two solid oak benches which will
form the seating area for those who wish to sit, contemplate and
view our town from the hill. In time, and with help, we intend to
create and maintain this oasis of calm for everyone to enjoy.
This is where we need volunteers. . .
• On Saturday 17th November we need help to carry, and plant,
30 hedging shrubs. Please bring a spade and a bottle of water
• On Sunday 18th November we need at least six strong men
(or ladies!) to carry each of the 6ft benches from the bottom of
Radar Hill to the garden area.
Everyone is welcome to come and see the garden area, gathering
to remember Holly this Sunday 17th (late morning), just before
the anniversary on 20th November. Exact times will be confirmed
on Facebook.
POPPY ROCKS FROM THE BROWNIES
The 6th SWF Brownies have been very busy over the last few
weeks remembering the people who died in WWl.
First, they found out the
names of real soldiers
from this little corner of
Essex who perished in
the Great War-
Sergeants, privates and
corporals.
They dedicated each
rock to a particular
soldier, writing his
name, and theirs and
painting a beautiful red
poppy on the rock.
Then we went on an
evening hike and carefully placed them around the town, next
to pathways, walkways and in the park.
We ended up at the chip shop in town - carrying rocks around
can be hungry work!
The fact that although it was a 100 years ago but had the
Brownies lived then these men could easily have been their older
brothers, dads, cousins or uncles really made an impression on
them.
LET ‘KIND OF BLUE’ START
YOUR CHRISTMAS
For an unusual Christmas concert, come to the Bell, Woodham
Ferrers on Sunday 16th December 2-4 pm. (not Monday 17th) to
support "Kind of Blue", a local modern jazz group, bring in the
festive season.
We will begin the afternoon with our usual mix of jazz "classics"
and songs from the "Great American Songbook" played in a
modern jazz style.
In contrast, the second half will consist of a Christmas "singalong"
performed essentially "by yourselves".
All of this will be accompanied with mulled wine and mince pies.
Expecting a large audience
(following our success in
June's ''Jazz on a summer's
day'' ) we are having to limit
numbers due to the available
space.
We will be entertaining you in
the hall of the pub, which
holds a bigger audience than
the inn itself, but if want to
come, contact the Bell (01245
320443) or Dave
(07774912083) for a ticket at
the princely sum of £5
(proceeds will go to breast
cancer). (Do this asap. as we
have sold a some already)
There will also be a raffle to
boost the charity's takings.
So if you want a "fun"
afternoon, and help a
worthwhile cause, get a ticket
for the 16th December.
Our November gig
If you can't wait until then
come to the ''Bell'' on
Monday 26th November 8.30-
our normal repertoire- covers
of such diverse artistes as
Dave Brubeck and Sade.
All of this, and sandwiches are
seeing you at either one (or
both) of these ''events''.
PUBLIC MEETING FOR HEALTH HUB
We are writing in reply to the letters in the previous issues of the Focus about the new health hub. We understand from
conversations with local organisations and residents that you want to know more about plans for the health hub being built
We are pleased to say that we are looking to organise a public meeting where you can hear about plans for the practices
working from the hub and other health services we expect to be available there.
We are looking to hold this meeting in December or January and will confirm the date and venue as soon as we can, giving
Focus readers the notice they need to come along. If anyone would like to share questions in the meantime so we can get a
response ready for the meeting, please email meccg.ppe@nhs.net or call 01245 459381. We look forward to welcoming you to
RECORD BREAKING CHALLENGE
On Tuesday 16 October we were delighted to welcome a former
student, Dawn Wood, back to William de Ferrers School.
Dawn, who is a professional yacht master and skipper with the
Essex police marine unit, spoke to a selection of year 8, 9 and 13
geography classes about her upcoming 'Row Aurora' challenge.
This challenge will see Dawn attempting to break the word record for the fastest time a solo female has crossed of the Atlantic,
whilst at the same time collecting valuable scientific data and evi-dence on ocean plastic pollution. Students and staff thoroughly
enjoyed listening to Dawn's fas-cinating presentation. At the end of her presentation one year 8 student commented ‘I enjoyed
listening to Dawn Wood today because she inspired me and made me think if I put my mind to do something, I can do it. You don't
need all the money in the world, just a big dream’.
SOLDIER’S vIOLIN SOUNDS OUT ONCE MORE IN TOUCHING REMEMBRANCE TRIBUTE
A violin which went to the
Western Front with a young
soldier is to be played once
again in a special free concert
to mark the Centenary of the Armistice.
Born in Walthamstow, Albert Edward Burchell enlisted into the
Essex Regiment on 30 December 1914 at the age of seventeen
and a half. In 1916 he was posted to the Western Front as part
of the Hertfordshire Regiment, carrying with him his treasured
violin, on which he scratched his Army numbers, units and some
of the places he served in.
Private Burchell survived to see the end of the First World War,
one hundred years ago on 11 November 1918, and lived to the
age of 86. After his death, his family very kindly donated his
violin to the Essex Regiment Museum.
Now it will be played once more as part of a free concert
arranged by Chelmsford City Council in collaboration with Essex
Music Education Hub and Orchestras Live.
On Wednesday 7 November, a hundred young musicians from
five Chelmsford schools will perform a new composition for
orchestra and choir, 'The Violin', at Chelmsford Cathedral. The
concert will feature Private Burchell's violin, played by one of the
young local musicians side-by-side with professionals from the
City of London Sinfonia and other young people from
Chelmsford County, Hylands, Sandon, Boswells and Great
Baddow High Schools.
Created by the young musicians in collaboration with composer
John K Miles, the piece tells the story of Private Burchell and his
instrument as they journeyed to the front line in the Great War,
through many battles and ultimately to a safe return home to
look forward to future peace.
The concert also includes readings by the students and music
performed by the City of London Sinfonia of works written by
wartime composers, including Holst, Ravel, Vaughan Williams
and George Butterworth.
Private Burchell's grandson, Alan, and granddaughter Adele are
coming all the way from Cornwall to hear the concert.
The family were contacted by Major Peter Williamson, Chairman
of Trustees of the Essex Regiment Museum, who said, "We are
delighted that one of our most interesting museum exhibits is
being brought back to life in a way that reminds all of us alive
today of the sacrifices made by so many who have fought for
our freedom over the years."
Albert's violin to be played at such a poignant centenary
Remembrance concert."
The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Yvonne Spence, said, "This
is a wonderful way to remember those in the First World War,
serving and supporting the Armed Forces, and their families left
at home. Thanks to all involved - it should be a very special
evening."
Peter Lovell of Essex County Council's Music Services said, "It is
not every day that a new work is composed by young people
about World War One, and this work based around the unique
journey of a soldier's violin has been a superb stimulus."
Stuart Bruce of Orchestras Live said, "This is the fourth project we
have produced with City of London Sinfonia, Essex Music Services
and schools in Chelmsford, the main aim being to enable young
people to shape their collaboration with world-class musicians
by creating, performing and presenting music for an orchestral
concert."
A collection will take place at the concert in aid of the Royal
Anglian Regiment Benevolent Charity, which helps to look after
veterans in need, whether old or young, Regular or Reserve.
Doors open at 6.30pm and the concert takes place 7pm - 8.15pm.
To avoid disappointment, booking is advised. Please telephone
Chelmsford Civic Theatre Box Office on 01245 606505 or visit
www.chelmsford.gov.uk/theatres.
Albert added, "This cherished violin not only came home from
the trenches as a soldier's memento, but also survived World War
Two when my grandfather lost not one, but two, homes during
the Blitz.
"We are so thrilled that this small battered and scratched
instrument not only survived, but will be heard again after one
hundred years. It is a little sad that Albert will know nothing of
this occasion, but we think he would be both mildly amused and
hugely moved to hear his beloved violin again, and to feel such
a tangible connection. We are looking forward to honouring his
memory with this small but important piece of our country's
history."
The concert is one of a number of events taking place across
Chelmsford to mark the centenary of the end of the First World
War and to remember all those who made sacrifices.
For further information, please visit
www.visitchelmsford.co.uk/armistice2018.
Alan said, "I was delighted to hear about the Chelmsford
Cathedral concert very recently, it was wonderful timing, as
Major Peter Williamson had been trying to find me for a while -
I had moved since the violin was donated by my family to the
Essex Regimental Museum in 1999.
"I have vivid memories of my grandfather Albert Burchell playing
this violin to me when I was a young boy - he and his wife were
evacuated to the Lizard in Cornwall during World War Two and
remained there for the rest of their days.
The new season‘s films have been well received with all getting an approval rating of Good or better. However, the best is yet to come for what
promises to be another blockbuster season for the Maldon Film Club.
The Club meets again at Maldon Town Hall Tuesday 4th December when the film to be shown will be The Insult, a nomi-nee for Best Foreign Language
Film 2018. The Insult describes how a misunderstanding involving a drainpipe on a bal-cony incongruously sparks a politically charged scandal that
reopens historical and political wounds in Lebanon. When Yasser, a Palestinian refugee, and Tony, a Christian nationalist, go head to head Yasser utters
an insult Tony cannot for-give. The media and a famous right wing Christian lawyer fuel the two stubborn men in court opening old wounds and unresolved
tensions that threaten to divide the nation.
Our second screening for this month, on Tuesday 18th December, is Finding Your Feet. Finding Your Feet, described as a light hearted, happy and
uplifting film, stars amongst others Imelda Staunton, John Sessions, Josie Lawrence, Celia Imre, Timothy Spall and Joanna Lumley. When Lady Sandra
Abbott discovers that her husband of forty years is having an affair with her best friend she seeks refuge in London with her estranged older sister
Bif. Bif drags her along to a community dance class where gradually she starts to find both her feet and romance.
The programme for the rest of the 2018/19 season, which covers a wide variety of themes with films from different regions of the world, includes Jules
et Jim (this season’s classic), The Shape of Water, In Between, Film Stars Don’t Die in Liver-pool, The Florida Project and the mutli award winner Three
Missouri. The season continues
until 29th May 2019 with films
THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANING CARPETS AND UPHOLSTERY
Kevin Barber Owner of Careclean, Carpet Cleaning Business has been established for over 34 years and will be writing our
featured monthly column on Cleaning providing tips and guidance to keeping your home clean and healthy.
Kevin says “Homeowners often assume that their carpets and upholstery are clean simply because they look clean; however,
even carpets and upholstery that look spotless may have collected germs, dust and soil below the surface. To increase the life
and appearance of your carpets & upholstery, you should have them professionally cleaned every year - even before you
recognise visible surface dirt.
Consider following the next three steps. Tending to the needs of your carpet is a small step towards improving the appearance
and health of your home. Below are some handy tips and guidelines for maintaining your carpet.”
1. Vacuum your carpets at least twice a week - up to 80% of
carpet dirt is loose and removable with regular
vacuuming.
2. Rotate your furniture occasionally. This helps to prevent
premature carpet wear and soiling in regular traffic areas
of your house.
3. If you’ve ever attempted to clean your carpet with a
rental or home steam cleaner, take great caution. If you
don’t remove most of the water, your carpets could easily
result in an unhealthy situation. High moisture levels can
leak through to the carpet back and underlay which could
promote the growth of mould and mildew. Also if not
properly rinsed out the carpet will re-soil much quicker.
CHELMSFORD REMEMBERS THEM – IN CONCERT
Chelmsford has not forgotten its men taken in the Great War.
100 musicians from five Chelmsford schools performed ‘The
Violin’ – a work inspired by a First World War Soldier, Private
Burchell, and his Violin.
Private Burchell’s family will never forget hearing the Violin
again.
violin, which both made the journey to the Front Line of the
Great War, through many battles and ultimately a safe return
home to look forward to future peace. The areas of Europe
where he fought with dates are etched on the back of the violin
in Burchell’s hand.
After Burchell’s passing in 1999, his family very kindly donated
his violin to the Essex Regiment Museum.
When the idea of using Burchell’s violin in a concert was
discussed, Major Peter Williamson, Chairman of Trustees of the
Essex Regiment Museum, contacted the family and added "We
are delighted that one of our most interesting museum exhibits
is being brought back to life in a way that reminds all of us alive
today of the sacrifices made by so many who have fought for
our freedom over the years."
Private Burchell as a young man and later in life.
Private Burchell's grandson, Alan, and granddaughter Adele and
other family members travelled from Cornwall to hear the
concert. Alan said "This cherished violin not only came home
from the trenches as a soldier's memento, but also survived
World War Two when my grandfather lost not one, but two,
homes during the Blitz.
Private
Burchell’s
Violin in its
case.
“My parents, my sister Adele and my children all feel so proud
and very honoured that time and money was spent on restoring
Albert's violin to be played at such a poignant centenary
Remembrance concert."
"We are so thrilled that this small battered and scratched
instrument not only survived, but will be heard again after one
hundred years. We are looking forward to honouring his
memory with this small but important piece of our country's
history."
The Violin was created and performed by the young musicians
with composer John K Miles in a concert on Wednesday 7
November in Chelmsford’s Cathedral. The five schools formed an
orchestra and choir and performed with City of London Sinfonia,
a leading chamber orchestra, directed by Miles. The now
restored soldiers’ violin was performed throughout the world
premiere of this original work by young violinist Iris Heij from
Boswell School.
The Violin musically describes the story of Private Burchell and his
Grandson Alan Burchell said "I have vivid memories of my
grandfather Albert Burchell playing this violin to me when I was
a young boy - he and his wife were evacuated to the Lizard in
Cornwall during World War Two and remained there for the rest
of their days.
Private Burchell's son David and his daughter-in-law Jo are now
both in their late 80s and they have their own memories of
Albert playing this violin when they were engaged in the early
1950s.
After the concert, The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Yvonne
Spence, said, "This was a wonderful way to remember those in
the First World War, serving and supporting the Armed Forces,
and their families left at home. Thanks to all involved -
Composer John K Miles commented “It was, as I said at the
concert last night, a genuine privilege to be part of such a
memorable event, at the heart of a community, with musicians
ranging from beginner to top flight professional.”
Valerie Tinker, Culture and Community Engagement Lead, Essex
County Council said “A truly remarkable evening, great to see
all the young people involved and a new composition that won’t
now leave my head! I know how much work goes into such
events, so thank you all.”
The concert also included poetry readings by students who
entered the Chelmsford Festival of Ideas, Peace Poetry
Competition. Young students also introduced the music by the
CLS of works written by wartime composers including Holst,
Ravel, Vaughan Williams and George Butterworth.
The retiring collection in aid of the Royal Anglian Regiment
Benevolent Charity, raised a significant amount of money.
The concert is one of a number of events taking place across
Chelmsford to mark the centenary of the end of the First
World War and to remember all those who made sacrifices. For
THE SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR STOW MARIES GREAT WAR AERODROME
In the week leading up to one of the most poignant dates of the
year, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome has received
confirmation from Maldon District Council that the site will be
able to increase its aircraft movements to no more than 3,000 in
any one calendar year.
A movement is defined as a take off or a landing, and the
condition is also subject to a daily limit in any 24hr period, of 30
movements, 15 take offs and 15 landings. On special public flying
days, the site will be allowed a maximum of 120 movements, 60
take offs and 60 landings.
After months of waiting, CEO Ian Flint, spoke of the success, and
the future: “The Team at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome are
overjoyed that the site has just been granted permission to
increase the activity of its classic and traditional light aircraft.
While we have not changed what sort of aircraft we fly, or when,
being able to welcome members of the aviation community
again is a brilliant achievement. I’m so proud that our
neighbours have embraced us, like the regional and national
historical and aviation community have.”
The long campaign has been supported by neighbours,
politicians and Historians Dan Snow and Saul David, and the
increase will bring a much needed boost to the much loved local
treasure.
On hearing the news, award winning historian Dr Saul David,
Patron of SMGWA said: “I’m really happy to hear of this decision,
which will help to secure the future of this highly prized heritage
site.”
Peter Martin, Chair of the Board of Trustees added: “We’re very
clear on what we want to see at the Aerodrome, and the beating
heart of the site is the aircraft that echo its original purpose. It’s
great to have Maldon District Council show that they recognise
this and support our work to breathe life into this wonderful
local heritage resource. This will have a real impact on our
funding to continue to fund our renovations.”
The Aerodrome will once again welcome ‘Single engine, fixed
wing’ aircraft, but will still not host balloons, twin engine
aircraft, helicopters, gliders or chartered passenger or cargo
flights and has no intention to change this.
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome boasts Europe's largest
collection of Royal Flying Corps WW1 buildings which were not
adapted for further military use later in its history. Over the
winter season the site will be open to the public from 10am –
5pm, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Pre-arranged group
visits, including coach trips, are also very welcome.
SWF ROTARY CROCUS PLANTING
FOR END POLIO CAMPAIGN
The occasion was to help the Reception and Classes 1 and 2 to
plant their crocus, the Club had supplied each child with a pot,
compost and 9 crocus bulbs as part of the Rotary ‘End Polio’
campaign. All the bulbs will flower purple, this is because when
a child overseas receives the vaccine developed to stop polio,
their little finger is dipped in purple dye to indicate they have
been immunised.
Rotary with other Health Organisations have been involved in
the project since 1950 and is 99% on the way to eradicating polio
globally. There have been no new cases in Africa for over a year
and the focus is now on achieving similar result in India, Pakistan
and Afghanistan.
Our thanks to the staff at the school who helped to make this
possible, and of course to the children who appeared to enjoy
themselves whilst learning about polio and planting their pots.
silhouettes of First World
War soldiers. This one is
positioned in Ormonds
within the village.
The silhouette is attached
to the village sign and
reminds us that the village
is in the Doomsday Book. It
also reminds us that the
soldiers went from a rural
Essex background with its
village church to defend
our land. The silhouette is
visible to everyone
travelling along the main
road in the village.
The image also shows that the silhouette is positioned amongst
the very ordinary ongoing aspects of aspects of village life. It is
near a bus stop from which people come and go, the bus stop
has a litter bin. The autumnal foliage clearly shows us that this
is the time of year that the First World War ended. Life does go
on, seasons turn and now there are very few people alive who
remember the First World War. At least we can demonstrate that
I’m sitting here in my lounge where, for the 6th night in a row,
our dog is hiding under the sofa and shaking because of the
sound of fireworks. The only advice for dog owners is to keep
them inside, shut the curtains and turn the TV sound up. We do
all that, but so far, every night from last Friday to today
(Thursday 7th) someone somewhere has fireworks, and we’re
expecting it will continue through to this weekend as well.
We don’t expect fireworks to disappear completely, but while
people are all deciding to have their own display, when it
happens every night in a row, our dog has to suffer for over a
week. There are some things that could help:
ANDREW BRIGGS 2019 CALENDAR – THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOS
It has been 2 years in the making, and when looking through the
final images it is hard to believe these are all walking distance
within our beautiful town. Whilst at the Arts & Craft fair I had
many questions of how I captured the images, and so I thought
it would be nice to share the stories behind the pictures.
January & December – at last we had snow, and a 4 hour walk
around our entire town allowed me to capture snowy scenes
that had not been possible during the previous four/five years.
February – those deep frosty mornings, and convincing myself to
get up and out before sunrise, then hoping I have picked the
right location. The Fenn did not disappoint as the sun rose.
March – those mornings when the Sun rises up from the river are
spectacular, it means a 4:30 to 5:00 alarm and waiting by the river
in the dark before sunrise, but when it rises out from the river
….wow.
April & June – The Woods on the top of Radar Hill, somewhat
illusive for me until this year. April bluebells were stunning. June
involved a bit more scrambling through the woods, and
unbeknown to me at the time, insects disturbed decided to feast
on me…..I now carry antihistamines!
May – our wonderful wildlife. This image involved a week of
walking round the river every evening as the famous “ride a
white swan” only happens on one day as the parent swans then
force the cygnets to swim on their own. Using a long lens, so as
not to disturb them, I hoped they would look, and they did.
July – 2 years finding a right tree that would line up with a
setting sun, on a cloudless sunset, not too much to ask. Saw in
on a Monday, but had a wide-angle lens for the sunset, so the
tree was far too small, the chance missed. A second chance in
photography is something you rarely get and Tuesday was
cloudy, was the chance gone? Wednesday’s weather looked
promising so I waited at the start of Willow Grove. I could be
seen running down the pavement as the sun came down,
carrying a very large lens, then coming to an abrupt halt. The
sun had lined up and click…got it, at long last.
August – the 4-sister trees, for me there is just something special
about this view, one that I always look at whenever passing. For
this image straw bales, good weather, and a hayfever tablet!
September – I still remember shaking as I took this image, I could
not believe what I was seeing. Never have I seen such a sunset,
this the result of Sahara sands in the atmosphere.
October - the misty mornings at the river, getting up super early
and standing in the cold as the mist floats down the river and
the sun comes up. I have so many special memories of
spectacular sunrises at the water’s edge, and here in SWF, that
early alarm soon forgotten.
November – sunrises are like fingerprints, all one of a kind. I
posted this one in an international Canon forum and had many
questions asking what part of the orient this was, I replied, it’s in
a small town in Essex!
It has been a challenge, and fun capturing images around our
beautiful town, and this is what makes photography such an
enjoyable hobby for me. It can be frustrating but so rewarding
and it takes me to a place where the stress of work is gone. A
huge thank you to everyone for the likes and comments on my
images over the years, and who have bought and will be buying
my 2019 calendar, it is truly humbling.

MORE THOUGHTS ON SOUTH WOODHAM DEvELOPMENT
So, the Plan goes forward. Despite the fact that no result of the
questionnaire the council sent out has been published so
transparency seems to be missing on this subject. As far as I am
concerned I am totally convinced that even if every resident in
Woodham objected to the plan the development will still go
ahead for the following reasons.
Westminster wants more houses built and despite the fact that
a massive development is taking place on the outskirts of
Chelmsford which, by the look of it will ultimately be bigger
than South Woodham it is very convenient to stick another
bunch of properties here because every house, shop, and factory
unit will be subject to tax, so they satisfy the requirements of
their lords and masters in Whitehall and do very nicely thank you
We are still carrying the highest rate of tax despite dwindling
services. We are A VERY EASY EARNER for the Chelmsford
council.
There is a requirement to provide a base for travellers so under
the euphemism of ‘travelling entertainers’ Chelmsford can meet
this requirement well away from their own doorstep. And they
call people like me a NIMBY!
The developers will undoubtedly be giving the council a
handsome sum of money’ for the development of services’. I
wouldn’t mind betting that we will experience very little in the
way of this money or services, it’s too tempting to use it nearer
to home.
Despite the residents objecting the petrol station went ahead
and now further desecration of our rural environment is going
to take place by building a fast food place where landscaping
would be so much more suitable. This is evidence that no matter
what we, the people who will have to live with the after-math
say, Chelmsford will go ahead anyway.
The plan will undoubtedly go through with a big rubber stamp.
Why else would they be building a massive structure like the one
we can see when coming down from top Woodham? A shop that
size will need a lot of customers.
I know that I have regularly commented about the developers
platitudes. Their interest lies purely with making money and they
will build to make as much money as possible and hang the
environment. As far as they are concerned paying for a good
public relations officer who can say all the things the city council
want to hear is money in the bank.
I wrote the above comments before I read Kevin Greens
comments in a recent Focus and I have avoided, thus far, making
any comment of a political nature but I must agree with Mr.
Green in this case. It is blatantly obvious that no matter how hard
or how many residents protest the group who are supposed to
be representing us, the people, will always be biased in favour of
their political paymasters. After all, wouldn’t you want to protect
your income before worrying about what people think of you?
The city council goes to bed at night and sleeps well knowing
that they will get approval from their masters and who knows
what from the developers?
I am reminded of words from Douglas Adams’ Book The
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy wrote “Resistance is futile” just
before the earth is destroyed.
Christmas is coming….
Yes, it’s that time of year when we all start gearing up for the big day, and I expect that YOU are expecting a message about
putting the ‘Christ’ into Christmas. Well actually the Christian faith has more to offer at this time of year than carol services,
christingles and midnight mass. The Christian faith is a practical faith, that gives you the tools to steer yourself through this
busy time. Exodus 20: 8-10a “Remember the sabbath day and keep it holy. Six days you shall labour and do all your work.
But the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God; you shall not do any work.” The Israelites had come from slavery
in Egypt – where they worked 7 days a week making bricks. God knew that rest was important to his people, so he told
them to take some time out. If you are the one that buys the presents, orders the food and decorates the house, build in
some time to do nothing. And don’t feel guilty – because God says you need it. Hosea 6:6 “For I desire steadfast love and
not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.” God was fed up with his people practicing religious
ritual, rather than showing love for him. Now if your turkey ends up a burnt offering – that could be a problem. But is it?
Does it really matter if the lights on the tree go out, or you forgot the cranberry sauce, or you left it too late to wrap the
presents. We get so tied up in getting everything right, we sometimes forget to enjoy ourselves. Don’t worry about these
things – God says they don’t matter. Finally: 2 Timothy 2 23: “Have nothing to do with stupid and senseless controversies;
you know that they breed quarrels.” Sadly, when families come together, it’s not always harmonious, arguments can start
over the smallest of things. Be aware – you are not going to sort out Brexit over your Christmas dinner – don’t go there.
You can walk away from arguments – God says so. So, there’s the Bible’s tips for a good Christmas. Oh, and by the way, don’t
forget to put Christ in it!
MISSING
Please can people keep an eye out for
our very loved cat. Sparkles went
missing from the Ormsby Chine area on
the 1st November, it could be a
possibility that she has been shut in
somewhere as she is a cat that very
much stays around our area and could
have been frightened from fireworks
and travelled around South Woodham
so please could people check garages
and out buildings in case she is hiding.
A possible sighting of her was around
Asda petrol station and also a possible
sighting around Rainbow Walk.
Sparkles is microchipped and is a larger
size cat (6kg) but could have lost
weight by now, has a complete black
face/back and short tail with white
paws/belly and chest she is a very timid
cat. If anybody sees her or has been
looking after her thinking she is a stray
FOCUS
THE CHANGING OF THE GUARD. As a newly qualified doctor, I had to
move from from Addenbrooke’s Hospital to Chesterton Hospital ... this
was to Addenbrooke’s what St Peters is to Broomfield.
As some of you will recall, when I was working on Swavesey Ward at
Chesterton, I met a student nurse called Sue and, whilst we were putting
up a 'drip' for a patient called Mrs Swan (who’d had a severe stroke and
had shown no sign of the recovery hitherto) I asked her out. For those
of you who are wondering: "Why did he ask Mrs Swan out?" let me
make it clear that it was Sue I asked, not her! When I did so, although she
had not previously reacted to any stimuli, Mrs Swan appeared to smile –
at least that’s the way we interpreted her response. It could of course
have been a grimace – her way of saying: "Take heed of the advice of
your fellow nurses about the dangers of going out with young doctors.
You're walking into a minefield!" Fortunately, we’re still ‘going out’ - so
it may have been a smile after all.
There were several World War I veterans on the ward who gave the
impression that living with constant shelling was preferable to being
forced to listen to the loud 'pop music' station that the Swavesey Ward
Clerk felt would cheer them up. I did not spend a lot of time talking to
them about their experiences as the First World War seemed a very, very
long time ago - even then - and, for many, myself included, an interest
in history tends to develop in later life.
Armistice Day 2018 has brought with it a rash of WW! programmes but,
of all those that have attempted to enable us to see the war through the
eyes of those who served, the most spectacular is 'They Shall Not Grow
Old' the new documentary by Peter Jackson (of 'Lord of The Rings' fame.)
He’s taken shed-loads of WW1 footage, cleaned up the grainy old film
stock, 'colorized' much of it, found a way of dealing with the erratic
speed that was typical of hand-cranked cameras, had lip-readers work
out what was being said, and pinched the idea that was used so
successfully in The World at War (that is to say, he's added sound effects
so that, for example, you get some idea of just how loud it was when a
shell exploded anywhere near you. It’s definitely one to see – providing,
of course, you can stand the sight of the carnage that is part and parcel
of any war on whichever stage it is set – and that was taken to extremes
in this particular conflict.
Although the WW1 veterans are, by and large, long gone, we’ve seen a
lot of Second World War veterans whilst practicing in South Woodham,
of course – but even they are disappearing rapidly now. The latest was a
Halifax bomber pilot called Stanley Emms, a Halifax pilot in WW2, who
survived around 30 raids over Germany (when the average was around
3 or 4 sorties before they were shot down) only to go missing in South
Woodham when a relative moved him elsewhere without giving us any
opportunity to say goodbye. (You’d be amazed how often this happens
– elderly people who have been around for years and whom we count as
friends are suddenly whisked away ... and we never see or hear of them
again.)
I visited him once on Remembrance Sunday to check his TV was working
as it had been playing up. (It wasn't working - and he was on his own).
We managed to get it going and watched the cenotaph ceremony
together. Like many survivors he was reluctant to tell tales of derringdo.
He said: "People are always asking me about it. I've spent my life
trying to forget."
“Do you know what I love most about baseball? The pine tar, the resin,
the grass, the dirt. And that’s just the hot dogs.” – David Letterman
BREAST CANCER NEWS: Breast cancer is commonly diagnosed, with
around one in 8 women being given the diagnosis at some point in their
lives.
Lucy Bode, writing in Women's Health says that: "The risk for the disease
increases with age – with most cases diagnosed after the age of 50. A
strong family history, inheriting a faulty gene, being overweight (and
being female) also play a role here. But, according to new research, those
who wake up early are less likely to fall victim. A team at the University
of Bristol analysed data from hundreds of thousands of people and
found that morning people have a 40-48 per cent lower chance of
developing breast cancer. In addition, they noted that women who slept
longer than seven to eight hours had a 20 per cent increased risk per
additional hour.
The researchers put this down to the body clock – also known as your
circadian rhythm – which determines your sleep patterns. The caveat:
FOCUS ON HEALTH
0South Woodham Focus
South Woodham Focus 23
they still haven’t determined why exactly it has such an impact on the
development of cancer."
So, if you're one of those people who can't get out of bed in the
morning, buy yourself a new 'super-loud' alarm clock. If that doesn't
work, ring James Dyson and ask him to invent a gadget that sets off the
burglar alarm if you don't step out of bed onto a pressure pad within 30
seconds and goes on to throw a bucket of ice cold water over you if,
despite all of the above measures, you continue to lie in bed.
“I like a woman with a head on her shoulders. I hate necks.” – Steve
Martin
Kat Lay, writing in The Times, reports that: "Breast cancer survivors
undergoing reconstructive surgery are not being warned that their
implants may lead to them developing the disease again. Women are
devastated by the news that they have a type of lymphoma, a potentially
deadly cancer, years after recovery, experts say. Surgeons have been
urged to report all cases of breast implant-associated anaplastic large
cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) to the health products watchdog, amid
concerns that numbers may be underestimated."
Kat goes on to say: "The cancer, whose exact cause is unknown, was only
identified in 2010, with the first case reported in Britain in 2012. Typically,
women notice one of their breasts swelling rapidly and painlessly." The
good news? According to this article, if the cancer is diagnosed early, "it
can usually be treated with surgery."
“I used to work at McDonald’s making the minimum wage. You know
what that means when someone pays you minimum wage? You know
what your boss was trying to say? ‘Hey, if I could pay you less, I would,
but it’s against the law.’” – Chris Rock
RABIES - A holidaymaker from the UK has died after being bitten by a
Moroccan cat, according to Public Health England (PHE). A PHE
spokesman is reported in The Telegraph as follows: "If you are bitten,
scratched or licked by an animal you must wash the wound or site of
exposure with plenty of soap and water and seek medical advice without
delay. There is no risk to the wider public in relation to this case but, as
a precautionary measure, health workers and close contacts are being
assessed and offered vaccination when necessary."
If you are going to any destination(s) where there is a risk of rabies, you
are advised to have the vaccine before you go - unless you are one of
those people who don't believe in vaccinations in which case you'd be
wise to avoid countries where it is endemic. (The WHO says: "Rabies is
present on all continents, except Antarctica, with over 95% of human
deaths occurring in the Asia and Africa regions." It goes on to say: "We
understand Bognor Regis is very nice.")
As for accessing jabs - at Greenwood we give pretty much every travel
vaccine including the more esoteric ones like yellow fever and rabies. At
other surgeries you can check the website first and then give them a ring
if you're in any doubt. If you want to go anywhere else for your jabs
Google 'Travel vaccinations Essex.'
MEETING. As you will have seen from the updates, preparations are afoot
for the long-awaited public meeting to discuss plans for healthcare in
South Woodham. The 'communications' people are keen to know the
type of questions that will be asked and have asked if the local practices
can let them know what to expect. Our Patient Participation Group (PPG)
is meeting this week to decide how best to go about this, and the other
surgeries in SWF are also doing their bit. If you feel strongly about the
matter - and no doubt many share the Mayor's view that this is one of
the most important developments in healthcare in the history of the
town - I'm sure your practice’s PPG will be happy to hear the sort of
question you would like to have answered. Failing that, pitch up to the
meeting and have your say.
WANDERERS’ DREAM OF A SUCCESSFUL CUP RUN
War poet Siegfried Sassoon’s anthem “Dreamers” describes the
comrades that he sheltered with under siege on the Western
Front in World War One:
“In the great hour of destiny they stand,
Each with his feuds, and jealousies, and sorrows.
Soldiers are sworn to action; they must win…
And in the ruined trenches, lashed with rain,
Dreaming of things they did with balls…”
This seems like an appropriate refrain for South Woodham
Ferrers United under 14 Wanderers at present: with perpetual
hammerings in the premier league, respite has occasionally
surfaced in the form of cup competitions. On Remembrance
Sunday Wanderers travelled to encounter Hambro Colts in the
League Cup and unusually, rather than being “lashed with rain”,
the weather happily abated. The sun emerged in time for the
impeccably kept two minutes silence, which gave the boys an
opportunity to reflect on recent performances and perhaps
remember former Wanderers’ comrades with whom they stood
arm in arm on other such anniversaries, their absent friends:
gentle giant Josh, talented Tom Foster, Harry, James and Sam.
Would the injury-hit squad reach their second round cup destiny
and strive to play on another week?
The Hambro keeper gratefully grasped an early shot from Tom’s
forward raid, but was unable to do so when Matthew’s precisely
slotted pass was juggled and converted by crusading Tom to put
Wan-derers ahead for the first time in many outings. Delightful
passing throughout the squad was reminiscent of Wanderers’
campaign of assault on the league at the end of last season This
demonstrated the contrast between the sort of play Wanderers
prefer to dream of and the recent Premier League nightmarish
reality: Daniel’s intelligent ball forward was passed through
Charlie and Bobby before ambitious Matthew ventured a shot
which forced a save. For once the defence was able to relax a
little: Luke, Harvey, Will and Daniel were well-organised and
equal to any Hambro attacking forays, confident in Harrison’s
growing goal-keeping prowess in Charlie R’s frustrating absence.
Matthew was lively throughout the match, drawing singular
praise from father Paul, while Charlie put in a battling
performance down the wing. Also in the thick of it were Bobby,
whose shot fluttered just wide from Tom’s powerful free kick,
and Freddie, whose through-ball to Jacob forced a splendid save.
A delighted Harvey headed home from the resulting corner to
give Wanderers a dizzying two goal advantage. Will’s free kick
was perfectly placed for Tom, whose scorching shot blasted just
over the bar.
Wanderers’ positive approach, free from sorrows, persisted after
the break, when Will’s wondrous free kick forced a corner which
Freddie deservedly converted for their third goal. “They’ve got
a bit of bite in them today” was Jacob’s grandad’s analysis of the
Wanderers’ performance and indeed they had: Bobby had two
chances in quick succession which carried over the bar, Matthew’s
mighty shot fell wide, while Freddie threaded his way through
the entire Hambro squad only to have his shot saved. From
Matthew’s amazing cross Tom was unlucky to hit the post, then
Tom’s whipping cross was a fraction too pacy for a Wanderers’
toe to turn the ball home. Becoming frustrated at their lack of
possession, a rare Hambro sortie forwards resulted in a skirmish
which left keeper Harrison with two foot-long stud scars down
his shin, inflicted long after the ball had scudded away. Luckily,
after the supporters eventually managed to draw the attention
of the referee to the outcome of his unwarranted wrangle,
Harrison was able to soldier on, recovering sufficiently so that
emergency substitute “little” Daniel A was not called upon to
make a daunting debut in goal. Continuing to push forwards,
Jacob hit the post, then forced the keeper to block, however a
jubilant Matthew was quickest and best placed to follow up,
scoring a rare and much celebrated goal. With the last touch of
the game Daniel’s hopeful shot fell wide to leave Wanderers
smiling, dreaming of future cup matches where “they must win.”
emergency), Daniel B, Freddie, Harrison, Harvey, Jacob, Luke,
SWF U15’s v MALDON U15’s
This week Woodham hosted local rivals Maldon. The teams had
played twice last season with both games being very close but
Woodham coming out on top for them both, so today was going
to be a grudge match between the two sides.
‘SINGLE-USE’ IS THE WORD
OF THE YEAR FOR 2018
Maldon lost the toss and Woodham elected to kick off. The
Maldon side were straight at Woodham from the off and with
2 minutes had crossed the line for their first Try of the game,
with the conversion missed the score 0-5.
Woodham restarted and again Maldon were up at the
Woodham defensive line. Maldon were well drilled and hitting
the gain line at pace, and the forwards were making ground
through the Woodham defences. Maldon again crossed the hosts
try line and again the conversion was missed 0-10.
After 2 more try’s Woodham seemed to wake up to the fact they
were playing rugby. They started to make ground on the Maldon
defences but were held out by some good defensive work from
the visitors. However, Maldon again pushed hard against
Woodham and again crossed for another Try. The score at half
time was 0 – 34 to the visitors.
In the second half Woodham continued to improve but Maldon
we stronger in the scrum and again pushed towards the
Woodham line. 3 more tries followed along with 2 conversions
before the game was stopped with Maldon taking the win 0-53.
A special mention to Travis who joined the team today for his
first match for South Woodham Ferrers.
Remembrance Day
Our mini section today stopped their training sessions to honour
those who fought in war for their country, observing 2 minutes
silence coinciding with the country’s silence to commemorate
100 years since the end of the 'War to end all wars'.
Other matches were rescheduled to later kick offs to allow
players to attend remembrance day services across the local area.
ue Blue
This is thanks to Prince Charles, Sky Ocean Rescue and other
high-profile campaigns to reduce the use of ‘single-use’ plastic
which is adversely affecting our marine environment.
Our very own Dawn Wood (AKA Smiffy) is also trying to reduce
the dependence on ‘single-use’ plastic. She is currently talking
to SWF William de Ferrers & St Joseph schools and schools in
Burnham on Crouch, who have energetically taken on the
challenge to reduce the reliance of ‘single-use’ plastics.
Dawn has recently appeared on Sky television to promote her
Challenge and will be featured on BBC Breakfast on the 17th
December prior to leaving on 28th December for her mindblowing,
incredible, epic solo challenge to row across the
Atlantic Ocean (completely unsupported) from Gran Canaria to
Barbados a distance of 3,000 miles. The Challenge is to highlight
the problems we Together face as we the can human make race a difference from discarded plastic
material contaminating our oceans.
She will also carry out sea water sampling throughout the
voyage, the micro plastic samples collected will be examined and
the test data made available to try to stop plastics from
damaging our seas Our Dawn would like to take this
opportunity to thank the many people and organisations who
have very generously contributed to the ‘ROWAURORA’
Challenge by means of events, collections & donations. She
would also like to thank everyone who follow on Facebook,
Twitter and website, she is extremely grateful for the support.
Although, this is a solo journey she knows she is not alone!!....
we thank you most sincerely. Thank you to the East of England
Ambulance Service HART team for helping Dawn to brush up on
her medical skills and making sure she has the right kit. Thank
you so much to Clear Thinking IT for your support and for
becoming a sponsor. Clear Thinking IT delivers IT & Telephony
services to businesses locally, nationally & internationally and
have pledged to reduce their ‘single use’ plastic in the
workplace.
It has been absolutely incredible to see so many people wishing
Dawn well for the extraordinary Challenge she is going to
undertake. Don’t forget to track her epic journey throughout
January & February 2019
God Bless Dawn, a very special person and not forgetting True
Blue a very special rowing boat….
