I’m sitting here in my lounge where, for the 6th night in a row, our dog is hiding under the sofa and shaking because of the sound of fireworks. The only advice for dog owners is to keep them inside, shut the curtains and turn the TV sound up. We do all that, but so far, every night from last Friday to today (Thursday 7th) someone somewhere has fireworks, and we’re expecting it will continue through to this weekend as well. We don’t expect fireworks to disappear completely, but while people are all deciding to have their own display, when it happens every night in a row, our dog has to suffer for over a week. There are some things that could help: After-eight Social Club for the mature and young at heart… are holding 2 fabulous festive dances in December! SATURDAY 22nd DECEMBER West Maldon Community Centre Dancing to music from 5 Star Admission: Members £6 - Non members £8 Cold Norton Village Hall Dancing to the sounds of Mike’s Music Admission: Members £8 - Non members £10 There is no bar at either of these venues please bring your own drinks and nibbles! Doors open 8pm The after eight social club runs various activities every month of the year including quiz nights, meals out, coffee evenings, excursions etc. !"#$%&#'()#$*+%"#,-'*"+$.("+)$/0120$341205$ !!!"#$%&'&()*%+,-(#.-./0"-,"/1 - the obvious thing is to go to the public displays - more fireworks to see and that would limit the number of nights of noise - if you can’t go to public displays, having your fireworks on the same night would help, or at least limit it to evenings at the weekend, not all week - if you are going to buy industrial size fireworks, please go somewhere suitable to let them off. It was one of these going off unexpectedly next to our house that started this off when our dog was in the garden. No warning - just a thunderclap that felt like we were being shelled. Thanks for listening, Alan To all dog walkers As a regular runner along the river and Saltcoats park, I constantly encounter free running dogs bounding up. I have no way of knowing whether they are friendly or aggressive and some can be intimidating. May I therefore ask dog owners to please, if you see a runner approaching, just hold your dog until we have passed. I fully accept the pleasure dogs and their owners get from free running but in return I am entitled to expect consideration for my safety and to run without having dogs jumping into me. Thankyou. Many Thanks Bob Bell Extended Access to GP Services hub in Maldon moves to Blackwater Medical Centre From Monday 12 November, patients who have booked an appointment with the mid Essex Extended Access service in Maldon will be seen at Blackwater Medical Centre. Extended Access offers GP-led appointments outside normal surgery times to everyone registered at a GP practice in Maldon District, Chelmsford City or Braintree District. You can book the appointments through your own GP practice and can choose to be seen at one of four locations, in Braintree, Chelmsford, Halstead and Maldon. When the service launched in Maldon on 1 October 2018, appointments between 6.30pm and 8pm on weekdays and between 8am and 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays were offered at Longfield Medical Centre in Princes Road. This is now moving just down the road to Blackwater. The two premises are only a couple of minutes’ walk apart so it ishoped there should be no disruption from the change. Other hubs from which Extended Access appointments are available are: • Elizabeth Courtauld Surgery, Halstead • North Chelmsford Health Centre in Springfield, Chelmsford • Mount Chambers Surgery in Braintree Appointments may be with practice nurses, GPs or other healthcare professionals, and there is no walk-in service. If you want to book an appointment outside of your own GP surgery’s opening hours, you can call NHS 111 who may decide an Extended Access appointment is the best care for you. If you no longer need an Extended Access appointment you have booked, you should contact your own practice during working hours, or outside surgery hours, call 07384 579479 to cancel. SOUTH WOODHAM <strong>FOCUS</strong> 0 South Woodham Focus South Woodham Focus 19 ANDREW BRIGGS 2019 CALENDAR – THE STORY BEHIND THE PHOTOS It has been 2 years in the making, and when looking through the final images it is hard to believe these are all walking distance within our beautiful town. Whilst at the Arts & Craft fair I had many questions of how I captured the images, and so I thought it would be nice to share the stories behind the pictures. January & December – at last we had snow, and a 4 hour walk around our entire town allowed me to capture snowy scenes that had not been possible during the previous four/five years. February – those deep frosty mornings, and convincing myself to get up and out before sunrise, then hoping I have picked the right location. The Fenn did not disappoint as the sun rose. March – those mornings when the Sun rises up from the river are spectacular, it means a 4:30 to 5:00 alarm and waiting by the river in the dark before sunrise, but when it rises out from the river ….wow. April & June – The Woods on the top of Radar Hill, somewhat illusive for me until this year. April bluebells were stunning. June involved a bit more scrambling through the woods, and unbeknown to me at the time, insects disturbed decided to feast on me…..I now carry antihistamines! May – our wonderful wildlife. This image involved a week of walking round the river every evening as the famous “ride a white swan” only happens on one day as the parent swans then force the cygnets to swim on their own. Using a long lens, so as not to disturb them, I hoped they would look, and they did. July – 2 years finding a right tree that would line up with a setting sun, on a cloudless sunset, not too much to ask. Saw in on a Monday, but had a wide-angle lens for the sunset, so the tree was far too small, the chance missed. A second chance in photography is something you rarely get and Tuesday was cloudy, was the chance gone? Wednesday’s weather looked promising so I waited at the start of Willow Grove. I could be seen running down the pavement as the sun came down, carrying a very large lens, then coming to an abrupt halt. The sun had lined up and click…got it, at long last. August – the 4-sister trees, for me there is just something special about this view, one that I always look at whenever passing. For this image straw bales, good weather, and a hayfever tablet! September – I still remember shaking as I took this image, I could not believe what I was seeing. Never have I seen such a sunset, this the result of Sahara sands in the atmosphere. October - the misty mornings at the river, getting up super early and standing in the cold as the mist floats down the river and the sun comes up. I have so many special memories of spectacular sunrises at the water’s edge, and here in SWF, that early alarm soon forgotten. November – sunrises are like fingerprints, all one of a kind. I posted this one in an international Canon forum and had many questions asking what part of the orient this was, I replied, it’s in a small town in Essex! It has been a challenge, and fun capturing images around our beautiful town, and this is what makes photography such an enjoyable hobby for me. It can be frustrating but so rewarding and it takes me to a place where the stress of work is gone. A huge thank you to everyone for the likes and comments on my images over the years, and who have bought and will be buying my 2019 calendar, it is truly humbling.
