My relationship with my doctor is
important to me because my health is
so did I. I wanted to continue my care
Have a Healthy Holiday
The holidays are all about indulging - parties, treats, sweets and
more. Come January, many of us look back on our December
gluttony with regret. What can we do now to reduce the guilt later?
It’s important to enjoy the holidays and, for many of us, that means
partaking in traditional family recipes. If there’s a dish you can’t live
without, see if you can make some substitutions.
Making a creamy dip to take to a party or potluck? Swap out the
sour cream for nonfat Greek Yogurt and serve it with veggies instead
of chips. Change out those buttery crescent rolls for something with
whole grains.
There is a lot of social pressure to overeat during the holidays. After
all, your friends and family spend hours preparing these dishes.
One great trick (especially for parties or buffet-style dinners) is to
start at the dessert table - not to take the sweets first. Take a dessert or
salad-sized plate instead of the dinner plate.
Then you’ll have about 30% less space that you’ll feel obligated to
fill. Stick with a spoonful or small serving of your favorites. Then layer
on the compliments to the chef.
Once you’re done with your small plate, drink a full glass or bottle of
water. If you’re still hungry, then take your small plate back for another
small serving of the things you loved most.
Many of us enjoy cocktails during the holidays that can also expand
our waistlines. If you are someone who likes to drink, start the party off
with a full glass or bottle of water and alternate water with each drink.
You can also swap out the alcohol for something festive and fun. For
example, mix some cranberry and pomegranate juice, top with seltzer
and a squeeze of lime. There’s also
a cranberry fizz with ginger ale,
cranapple juice, cinnamon sugar,
and a lemon or lime.
Of course, if you are drinking over the holidays, be sure to have a
designated driver or call a cab or rideshare service to get home safely.
