COWI Norway has embarked on a long-term project with Save the Children which is funding the improvement works on six schools, as well as the provision of nine wells and twelve latrines. Pupils and teachers alike will also receive training in water, sanitation and hygiene. The aim of improving the learning environment is to ensure that more children will complete their education. NEW TURBINES COULD CUT OFFSHORE COSTS BY TWO THIRDS US-based Nautica Windpower is developing an advanced floating turbine (AFT) to make offshore wind power more lucrative. Current offshore turbines rest on foundations made of concrete and steel, but the AFTs will float on buoys and sway in the wind much like “a palm tree bending in a hurricane”, according to Nautica’s founder, Larry Viterna. The U.S. Department of Energy has granted Nautica funding to develop prototypes, and COWI’s subsidiary, Ocean & Coastal Consultants in Connecticut, USA, will assist Nautica during the testing process. If the results prove promising, AFTs could provide electricity at a third of the current cost of offshore wind power by 2017. Clean ground in Porto Romano For many years Porto Romano’s soil, food chain and ground water were contaminated by toxic substances which were disposed of close to this Albanian coastal town. But five years of cleanup work have brought the situation under control. COWI and its local partner, Planconsult, were in charge of the the design of a controlled landfill and the supervision of the remediation work. 5
