12 MAPPING SERBIA
ROAD MAP
TO THE EU
43,000 aerial photos mark
Serbia's first step toward
the EU
For more than six years, COWI's fleet of aircraft has
flown over Serbia's 78,000 square kilometres leaving
no field, city or hill uncovered: all with the mission of
getting the ‘full picture’ as required for the country's
future EU application. Funded by the EU in order to
help to develop and modernise the country, the project
is not only paving the way to EU membership – it is also
laying the cornerstone for the development of Serbia's
infrastructure.
For the Republic Geodetic Authority of Serbia
the mapping project forms the basis for a number of
development and planning assignments including the
development of a land registration system, which will
cover the entire country.
Initially the project was estimated to take three years,
but because of the many flight permits that had to be
obtained from Serbian authorities and its neighbouring
countries, it ended up taking six years. „At one point no
one actually believed we were going to be able to complete
the project, so we are very proud of the fact that it
was a success,“ reports COWI's Chief Project Manager,
Yvonne Morville Petersen. ■
