In major cities across the world, younger
homeowners are swarming back into the
urban jungle. After spending years living
in the suburbs, the new generation is
finding cities a more appealing place to live in
due to their close proximity to the workplace,
educational institutions, retail outlets and other
points of interest. As a result, many have made
apartments or multi-storey residential buildings
their home.
This has presented a new challenge to interior
designers. On one hand, most apartment units
were constructed with limited space due to
population density in urban settings. On the other
hand, younger homeowners have developed a
taste for finer things in life; hence there is a need
to create living spaces that also appeal to a more
sophisticated crowd. Such is the challenge faced
by Ekaterina Lashmanova, whom was tasked to
design a residential apartment for a young family
situated in the imposing city of Moscow, Russia.
Having graduated as an architect, Ekaterina’s
creation emphasised on its space planning
features in order to ensure that the apartment
fulfills the practical needs of the young family. In
essence, the apartment houses a living room, two
bedrooms, two bathrooms, two dressing rooms, a
