THE VACATION
Electrifying
Escapes
Vivid Sydney
Transforming Sydney into a technological wonderland, light art
sculptures, innovative light installations and grand-scale projections
represent the point where art, technology and commerce intersect.
Nostalgia Above
Firefly Field
The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney is host to the Firefly Field
which consists of 500 flying light points that simulate an aerial
ballet of the tiny nocturnal winged creatures. Driven by their
fascination with the aesthetics and movement of these creatures,
Dutch artists Toer created a minimalist arrangement consisting
of LED light points housed in transparent capsules. These are
supported on superfine, barely visible steel rods that flex and
spring with the weight of the pod, giving each simulated firefly
its unpredictable and natural movement.
Tapping into fond childhood memories of daydreaming while
cloud-watching, Nostalgia Above connects the romance of nature
with data-driven climate technology using clouds as its medium.
A collaboration between Capto Collaborative, the youngest team
of artists in Vivid Light and Beyond Blue, it uses programmable
LED bulbs diffused through clusters of translucent polycarbonate
spheres and projections of environmental imagery to create the
illusion of rolling cloudscapes as someone walks beneath it.
