Stahlwerk Thüringen to upgrade section mill with universal mill U1<br />
Stahlwerk Thüringen GmbH, a company<br />
of Brazilian Grupo CSN, has selected<br />
SMS group for the supply of a new CCS ®<br />
(compact cartridge stand) universal<br />
stand U1 for its section mill in Unterwellenborn.<br />
As a result of the continuously growing<br />
range of sections produced, especially to<br />
include increasingly heavier and larger section<br />
sizes, Stahlwerk Thüringen has decided<br />
to replace the existing U1 stand in operation<br />
since 2002 as breakdown stand for the<br />
three-stand CCS ® tandem group. The new<br />
stand will be designed for a nominal rolling<br />
force of 6,000 kN horizontal and 4,000<br />
kN vertical. It will come with stronger roll<br />
guides and optimized roll cooling.<br />
The scope of the modernization also<br />
comprises the supply of a new control<br />
system (TCS) based on the X-Pact ® automation<br />
system for the complete CCS ®<br />
tandem group and adaptation of existing<br />
control systems. In addition to the upgrade<br />
of the hardware and the system software,<br />
the I/O level for the U1 will be newly set up.<br />
Last but not least, all screwdown systems<br />
will be controlled by a newly developed dynamic<br />
optimization system. Commissioning<br />
is slated to take place in August 2<strong>01</strong>9.<br />

Georgsmarienhütte commissions<br />
new profile gauge<br />
Georgsmarienhütte (GMH) has successfully<br />
commissioned a full profile measurement<br />
gauge from Friedrich Kocks.<br />
The Kocks 4D EAGLE ® gauge replaces a<br />
light measurement gauge at the exit of the<br />
existing Kocks RSB ® 370/6. The new gauge,<br />
working based on the laser light sectioning<br />
method, covers a production diameter<br />
range from 19.5 to 82.3 mm. Apart from<br />
increasing the reliability and consistency of<br />
hot bar profile measurements, the gauge<br />
provides profile data to the RSB ® size control<br />
system (SCS ® ) for closed-loop process<br />
control. The rolling defect detection feature<br />
enables auto-recognition of form deviations<br />
as well as rolling defects.<br />
