Business: Project Efficiencies SEEING CLEARLY: TOOLS & TECH TO ENHANCE INSTALLER PRODUCTIVITY By Colin Yates, Chief Support Officer at WorkMobile, an award-winning data capture solution. Glaziers have a crucial role to play in the overall productivity of construction projects. And yet, that overall productivity is low compared to other industries. The ONS tells us that productivity growth in the construction sector has averaged just 0.4% each year over the past two decades – as opposed to 3.2% in the manufacturing industry. There is clearly room for substantial improvement. And whilst glaziers are just one piece of the overall picture in the efficient management of construction projects, their own productivity can have a substantial impact on how such projects roll out. Fast, efficient glazing can make the difference between a project that runs to time (and therefore budget) and one that spirals out of control. The question is, how can glaziers improve their productivity? One possible answer can be found with the management consultancy McKinsey, which argues that the construction industry has been too slow to embrace digital technology. Digital technology for glazing installers This might initially seem strange. Glazing is a physical job, after all. However, advancements in mobile technology – both hardware like smartphones and tablets, and the cellular networks underpinning mobile communications – are powering innovative new tools for contractors on construction projects – like installers. Consider, for example, a glazier who comes across a fault or problem whilst undertaking their work. This needs to be recorded and escalated to the project manager – a process that can take a substantial amount of time in itself, and leave the glazier waiting unproductively whilst said manager decides whether and where to reallocate them. Consider, too, the health, safety and compliance checks which a glazier needs to carry out when starting a new project, and when confirming completion of an existing piece of work. These must be completed stringently, but doing them via paper-based processes, as is the norm in the industry, can be cumbersome and error-prone. Mobile technology offers an alternative approach. Now, glaziers can use data capture solutions to enter information into mobile apps whilst they are onsite, transmitting it back to project managers and overseers in real-time. Standardised forms and checklists can be prepopulated for repetitive tasks, saving time on data entry. And where further evidence is required for quality or compliance checks, glaziers can use the increasingly high-definition cameras on their mobile devices to gather visual and even videobased evidence remotely. Such technology is also useful for when glazing installers are working between multiple sites. Typically, they might end up carrying bundles of paperwork around which then have to be completed at a later point – leaving multiple opportunities for losing, damaging or incorrectly filing key documents. Then there’s the issue of glaziers coordinating with other contractors on a project. After all, glazing professionals typically need to collaborate with other construction functions, and are just one part of a multidisciplinary team on a typical building site. For maximum productivity, it is important for glaziers to be able to communicate when they have completed certain tasks – and receive equivalent information back from other teams. Going paperless Mobile technology can dramatically enhance all of these functions. There is now a wide variety of cost-effective digital applications available which can handle everything from initial data capture, to transmission of that data to cloud-based storage, to receiving back instructions and queries from project managers. This reduces errors, speeds up manual processes and enables glaziers to be better integrated with other construction teams, whether permanent or contract-based. Ultimately, it is now possible for glazing installers to do away with paper-based processes altogether, and the upfront investment required to enable this digital transformation is smaller than you might think, with many applications available as a service and making use of devices which installers already have in place.
