Recycling: Opinion SHOULD YOU BE TAPPING INTO THE CONSUMER’S RECYCLING APPETITE? Colin Torley, General Manager of CMS Trade, explains why installers should be tapping into homeowners’ increased recycling consciousness and habits to gain a competitive edge and secure more sales. Whether it is takeaway coffee cups, food packaging, clothing or cars, consumers are increasingly seeking products that can be recycled and don’t just end up being dumped in landfill when they are finished with them. According to a 2018 consumer survey by waste management company Viridor, 80% of people want more clarity on what happens to their waste, and more than three-quarters of respondents said they felt that too much waste is being disposed of in the UK, rather being treated as a valuable resource. When it comes to windows and doors, the PVC-U industry has transformed the energy efficiency and comfort of UK homes since it first emerged in the 1970s. It’s a sustainability contribution that is often overlooked – just consider what the country’s carbon footprint would be today if double glazing had not been made affordable and effective. But when you align yourself with the right PVC-U window and door manufacturer, energy efficiency is only the beginning of the sales proposition for consumers in today’s increasingly environmentally conscious residential market. As an industry we are getting better than ever at ensuring our waste doesn’t go to landfill, so we should be making sure that end-users know and can make informed choices. Many larger commercial and social housing window and door contracts already demand that the installer recycles as much waste as possible – especially the old windows and doors they are removing. After all, they have no desire to generate unnecessary landfill waste as responsible businesses and organisations. But “It is a way for us to use our established processes to help installers save costs, carbon and therefore be more competitive” homeowners want to be responsible too, and by choosing the right window and door supplier, you can help with a strong sales proposition. It doesn’t matter what frame type it is – timber, aluminium or PVC-U – these recycling processes are amongst the best in the industry, separating the frames from the hardware, seals and glass into waste material streams that can be easily re-processed. The effectiveness of this recycling set-up is outstanding. For the last two years, these facilities have ensured that CMS has sent zero waste to landfill – in the year to March 2019, 97% of waste was sent for recycling and 3% went for use in waste-to-energy plants. That’s a powerful selling point for homeowners – ‘we will ensure your old windows are fully recycled and can provide evidence to prove it’. But what of the new windows and doors? Recycling is the start of ‘closed loop’ thinking where we aim to keep re-using resources multiple times. We see it with PET plastic bottles for soft drinks, which are routinely collected, cleaned and recycled to go back into making new bottles. CMS Trade takes the same approach with PVC-U windows and doors, albeit with a much longer service life, and again, this will appeal to sustainability-minded homeowners. Using PVC-U profiles, glass and hardware that are manufactured using high levels of recycled content is the key. In the case of glass, CMS Trade has a partnership with Saint-Gobain Glass which ensures that all new sealed units used in our windows contain 38% post-use glass, an industry-leading level. It is the kind of insight that more and more consumers want to know, as is the fact that their new PVC-U windows and doors are virtually 100% recyclable at the end of a long service life. But there’s a direct, bottom-line boosting benefit to installers too. As any installer will know, disposing of old windows and doors comes at a financial cost which is increasing year on year. And by dropping off old windows when collecting new ones, rather than journeying to a waste recycling centre, there is a carbon saving too.
