Above: Being able to offer a range of roofs including traditional and solid options will enable the installer to provide the homeowner with the best solution.
“The market is there for conservatory installers
and small builders and to make the most of it
they need the right products and the right
service behind them”
consulted and can raise objections to extensions,
but the long and arduous process of applying for
planning application has been rescinded. To give
an idea of the difference this change in the
process will make, BBC News has reported that
since 2013, 110,000 people have taken
advantage of the temporary rules.
Conservatories and orangeries remain popular
among homeowners looking to extend their
property, although of course, the amount of glass
“Roof lanterns are also
a great option for
extensions to let in
more light”
in the structure will affect whether the building is
classed as an extension or a conservatory – both
come with their own set of rules and regulations.
Either way, the market is there for conservatory
installers and small builders and to make the
most of it they need the right products and the
right service behind them.
People want choice
So, how do we as an industry make the most of
this opportunity? Being able to offer a range of
roofs – including traditional and solid options –
allows the homeowner to choose the best solution
for them. Being able to have a solid roof on a
traditional conservatory is still a relatively new
idea for the consumer and needs to be marketed
well. Roof lanterns are also a great option for
extensions to let in more light, as is the new product
from Guardian, the Guardian Solstice System which
offers skylights built into a solid roof system.
The change in planning permission rules provides
an opportunity for installers to sell more
conservatories or conservatory upgrades.
Although the rules have been in place temporarily
for some time, the fact it has made the national
news brings the subject to the forefront of
people’s minds. If consumers were on the fence
about extending their property, they may now be
looking for suppliers to help make their dream a
reality. Installers that are confident in their supply
chain in terms of range of products and excellent
service are now in a great position to make the
most of this latest opportunity.
