It is important for people to feel special, if<br />

your hair looks good then you feel great!<br />

It may seem surface, but looking your best<br />

can help you feel better. I have worked with<br />

so many clients over the years – from brides,<br />

to celebrities for the red carpet, to models on<br />

the runway; the most rewarding work I do is<br />

with patients that are recovering from chemotherapy or<br />

other treatments or conditions that cause hair loss – hair<br />

can flourish after a crisis, and so can you!<br />

One such client is Jeanette; she has suffered some<br />

difficult times, and is a survivor of Cancer. There was<br />

a time when Jeanette had to wear wigs due to her<br />

chemotherapy – chemo targets cancer cells; but also, the<br />

healthy cells and as a result it destroys hair cells.<br />

Within a few weeks of having chemo, hair loss can<br />

occur – in patches or completely. The extent depends on<br />

your treatment. It is no surprise that when people lose<br />

hair that they can suffer shock, or become depressed<br />

and this can worsen the overall recovery process. It<br />

is a time when a lot of family and friends, as well as<br />

professionals need to be supportive.<br />

Here are some tips for this<br />

sensitive time:<br />

1Many ladies will want to cover their baldness by<br />

wearing a turban, scarf, or wig. There are so many<br />

fantastic wigs out<br />

there to try,<br />

some are synthetic,<br />

which are very light<br />

to wear or there are<br />

more natural looking<br />

human-hair wigs with<br />

lace/net seams that<br />

can easily be disguised<br />

with a good quality<br />

foundation.<br />

2Try on<br />

different styles<br />

and lengths<br />

of wigs to<br />

see which one feels<br />

comfortable and which<br />

helps you feel your best.<br />

4Ask a<br />

hairstylist for<br />

advice and<br />

whether<br />

they would be able<br />

to cut and shape the<br />

wig; styling it to suit<br />

your facial features<br />

and personality.<br />

Cutting wigs is an<br />

art in itself as one<br />

wrong snip then<br />

the whole wig is<br />

ruined! And that’s<br />

an expensive<br />

mistake to make!<br />

5Hair normally starts to grow back within a few<br />

months following chemo, starting with very<br />

fluffy hair for the first week or two then it will<br />

start to grow back at its normal rate. The new<br />

hair may differ from before, some hair will grow back<br />

curly, or thinner, or even thicker. I’ve had some clients<br />

come back to me after treatment and their hair is a<br />

completely different colour too.<br />

Jeanette’s hair has grown back beautifully and is shiny,<br />

but a little finer than before. She has<br />

a round face shape and I wanted to<br />

create lots of volume and height at<br />

the crown to lengthen and flatter<br />

her features.<br />

3Opt for a<br />

wig that is a<br />

slightly lighter<br />

colour than your<br />

natural hair colour, as the<br />

treatment may make your<br />

skin tone a little paler.<br />
