2019 Mississippi Nurses’ Association Annual Convention FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25 CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES UPDATE 4:05 p.m. - 6:35 p.m. Controlled Substances Update John Harless, Lieutenant, Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, Pharmaceutical Diversion Unit John Harless is a Lieutenant with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety - Bureau of Narcotics. He has been employed by MBN for over 20 years and in law enforcement for 22 years. He is currently assigned to the Pharmaceutical Diversion Unit and has had the opportunity to work throughout the state as an investigator and supervisor. Lieutenant Harless has provided training in drug identification and trends to many different audiences including law enforcement, prevention services, healthcare professionals, court personnel, and public educators. Lieutenant Harless has been a featured speaker at state, national and international level conferences, including the National Heroin and Opioid Summit. He is also active with Stand Up Mississippi, a multi-disciplinary group leading Mississippi’s efforts in combating the opioid crisis. Lieutenant Harless has been recognized for his work in both drug enforcement and public education with numerous awards. These awards include Agent of the Year, Director’s Award and Distinguished Service Award from MBN, and the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education. Prior to his employment with MBN, he was a Deputy Sheriff for the Lamar County, Mississippi Sheriff’s Office. 32
