decoder could be used directly on the speech signal, the interface to the<br />

PCM system is necessary in practice in order to maintain compatibility<br />

with existing PCM systems that are widely used in the telephone network.<br />

The ADPCM encoder accepts the 8-bit PCM compressed signal and<br />

expands it to a 14-bit-per-sample linear representation for processing. The<br />

predicted value is subtracted from this 14-bit linear value to produce a<br />

difference signal sample that is fed to the quantizer. Adaptive quantization<br />

is performed on the difference signal to produce a 4-bit output for<br />

transmission over the channel.<br />

Both the encoder and decoder update their internal variables, based<br />

only on the ADPCM values that are generated. Consequently, an ADPCM<br />
