WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE
EMPLOYMENT EQUITY ACT?
The purpose of the Employment Equity Act is to promote equity in the workplace and to eliminate unfair
discrimination. By implementing the Act, employers tend to achieve progress towards equity. This Act provides for an
additional reporting requirement by employers through the submission of an Employment Equity Report annually.
What does the Employment Equity
Committee do?
The Employment Equity Committees are responsible for ensuring
that the Employment Equity Act is implemented throughout the
organisation. The primary objective of the committee is, therefore, to
develop an EE plan and regulate its implementation. In doing this,
the committee promotes an environment where employees’ skills,
roles and remuneration are based on fair and non-discriminatory
practices. Furthermore, the committees ensure that the organisation’s
processes around recruitment and advancement within the business
are managed with the Act in mind. Finally, the National Employment
Equity Committee also ensure that the sub-committees or divisional
committees, as in the case at ADvTECH, are functional in pursuing
the mandate of promoting equity in the workplace.
How are the members of the Employment
Equity Committee elected?
Any permanent employee can serve as a member of the National
Employment Equity Committee and comittee members are elected
through an election process. The aim is to have an EE Committee
that is representative of all designated as well as non-designated
groups, and all job levels. When elected, the committee members
hold office for three years. Thereafter, the election process is resumed.
What are the roles and responsibilities of
The National Employment Equity Committee?
To identify Employment Equity and
Affirmative Action concerns and barriers.
To represent all employees in the interests of
Employment Equity.
To investigate any charges of discrimination
and/or harassment of any kind, and report any
findings to the EE Committee for recommendations.
To make recommendations to management
regarding the implementation of the Employment
Equity Plans.
To act as a representative channel for
all employees.
To act as the champions of cultural and
organisational change by behaving in accordance
with the code of conduct as stipulated in the
constitution of the National Employment
Equity Committee.
