FIRST NATIONS CULTURE
The province of Alberta is home to the
Métis peoples, with a population of more
than 85,000 – the largest in all of
Canada. Get an insight into the First
Nations cultures and practices on the
Mahikan Trails in Canmore, where a
passionate and knowledgable guide will
share the fascinating historical medicines
of the boreal forest while walking or
snowshoeing through the Rockies. Learn
how the plants in the forest and mountain
meadows have been used by the
Kwarakwante people of Jasper for
millennia on a Medicine Walk, and maybe
make a medicine of your own. Here, it’s
possible to get hands-on and back to
basics, learning to tan hide, make soap
and bead, just like those who first called
Alberta home.
