AYO BASSEY:<br />
Her beauty<br />
entrepreneurs<br />
The CEO of COC Beauty School, Ayo Bassey, is a multi-talented cosmetologist <strong>an</strong>d herbologist<br />
vast <strong>in</strong> the production of sk<strong>in</strong>care, haircare, makeup products <strong>an</strong>d perfumes.<br />
A serial entrepreneur <strong>an</strong>d bus<strong>in</strong>ess coach, the UK, US, India <strong>an</strong>d Spa<strong>in</strong>-tra<strong>in</strong>ed has, <strong>in</strong> the last<br />
ten years, raised over 100 beauty entrepreneurs <strong>in</strong> over 10 countries. She tells more on how<br />
she’s rais<strong>in</strong>g a generation of beauty entrepreneurs <strong>in</strong> Nigeria <strong>an</strong>d beyond.<br />
What propelled the birth of COC<br />
Beauty School?<br />
It’s a long story. While <strong>in</strong> my f<strong>in</strong>al<br />
year <strong>in</strong> the university, I decided I w<strong>an</strong>ted to<br />
own a cosmetic br<strong>an</strong>d. I w<strong>an</strong>ted a wide r<strong>an</strong>ge<br />
of safe, luxurious <strong>an</strong>d nourish<strong>in</strong>g cosmetic<br />
products alongside a cloth<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e. I looked<br />
for where to learn production <strong>in</strong> Nigeria but<br />
couldn’t f<strong>in</strong>d. It <strong>was</strong> of concern to me because<br />
I found where to learn fashion design<strong>in</strong>g for<br />
my cloth<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e dream but never found a<br />
cosmetic product formulation <strong>in</strong>stitute. I <strong>was</strong><br />
tempted to give up but at some po<strong>in</strong>t, I got<br />
motivated. I chose to take a bold step to travel<br />
out <strong>an</strong>d learn.<br />
I met my first <strong>in</strong>structor, Perry Rom<strong>an</strong>owski,<br />
a US-based cosmetic chemist; I learned a great<br />
deal from him. I desired more, so, I enrolled<br />
<strong>in</strong> Institute of Natural & Modern Cosmetics<br />
<strong>in</strong> India <strong>an</strong>d then S<strong>an</strong>dir Perfume School <strong>in</strong><br />
Spa<strong>in</strong>, <strong>an</strong>d later, Formula Bot<strong>an</strong>ica <strong>in</strong> the U.K.<br />
I did other short courses here <strong>an</strong>d there.<br />
After all the learn<strong>in</strong>g, I decided to launch<br />
my first product l<strong>in</strong>e. While develop<strong>in</strong>g my<br />
product l<strong>in</strong>e, my heart told me to launch a<br />
school, <strong>an</strong>d not a product l<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>an</strong>d that <strong>was</strong> it!<br />
I thought about all the people that were <strong>in</strong><br />
my shoes <strong>an</strong>d couldn’t f<strong>in</strong>d where to learn.<br />
What if they give up? I felt, why keep so much<br />
knowledge with<strong>in</strong> when you c<strong>an</strong> use it to build<br />
others? I <strong>in</strong>vested the money for my product<br />
l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>to <strong>set</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g up COC Beauty School <strong>an</strong>d<br />
I’ve never looked back.<br />
Tell us about the school?<br />
COC Beauty School is a Nigeri<strong>an</strong>-based<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitute that teaches cosmetic product<br />
formulation from scratch. We teach how to<br />
make a variety of products <strong>in</strong> sk<strong>in</strong>care, hair<br />
care, makeup <strong>an</strong>d perfumery (creams, soaps,<br />
serums, scrubs, shampoos, conditioners,<br />
lipsticks, eye shadows, body mists, perfumes,<br />
etc.)<br />
We raise beauty entrepreneurs. We do this by<br />
impart<strong>in</strong>g them with required formulation<br />
skill before giv<strong>in</strong>g them bus<strong>in</strong>ess direction on<br />
how to launch beauty bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>an</strong>d sell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the products that they learned to make<br />
What are the top three skills required<br />
before one c<strong>an</strong> venture <strong>in</strong>to the bus<strong>in</strong>ess of<br />
cosmetology?<br />
First, the ability to visualise the end from<br />
the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g. One has to have a clear<br />
direction of what one w<strong>an</strong>ts to achieve <strong>an</strong>d<br />
why.<br />
Second, formulation skill. One needs to<br />
underst<strong>an</strong>d how formulation works so that<br />
<strong>in</strong>novation c<strong>an</strong> step <strong>in</strong>. One also needs to know<br />
<strong>an</strong>d underst<strong>an</strong>d the <strong>in</strong>gredients, how they<br />
work, how they are used <strong>an</strong>d what to expect<br />
when used.<br />
Third, bus<strong>in</strong>ess skill. The cosmetic <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
is unique <strong>an</strong>d very competitive. Gett<strong>in</strong>g ahead<br />
requires master<strong>in</strong>g top cosmetic bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />
•Ayo Bassey<br />
secrets <strong>an</strong>d strategies.<br />
A good th<strong>in</strong>g is that we help<br />
our students develop all of these<br />
skills.<br />
What risks do you currently<br />
face as a cosmetic formulator<br />
operat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Nigeria?<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g to shop from some<br />
of our local suppliers is the<br />
major risk that comes to m<strong>in</strong>d;<br />
the risk of purchas<strong>in</strong>g raw<br />
materials without know<strong>in</strong>g if<br />
they have been tampered with<br />
or not. A lot of our local<br />
suppliers currently adulterate<br />
their <strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>an</strong>d this has<br />
<strong>an</strong> adverse effect on products<br />
created. Most of the time, we<br />
c<strong>an</strong> only determ<strong>in</strong>e <strong>an</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>gredient’s authenticity<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g production <strong>an</strong>d that’s a<br />
challenge because by then, you<br />
must have already purchased<br />
it <strong>an</strong>d spent a lot while us<strong>in</strong>g it<br />
for formulation.<br />
What differentiates a tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
beauty entrepreneur from one<br />
that is self-taught?<br />
Tra<strong>in</strong>ed beauty entrepreneurs are blessed<br />
because they don’t have to make all the<br />
mistakes others make. We’ve made all the<br />
mistakes for them, all they need do is follow<br />
the laid down pathway to success.<br />
They are also well-grounded formulators.<br />
They underst<strong>an</strong>d the hum<strong>an</strong> sk<strong>in</strong>, the hum<strong>an</strong><br />
hair, how they work, what <strong>in</strong>gredients they c<strong>an</strong><br />
take safely <strong>an</strong>d what they c<strong>an</strong>not take. They<br />
underst<strong>an</strong>d what <strong>in</strong>gredients proportions to<br />
use based on sk<strong>in</strong> type, race, climate <strong>an</strong>d<br />
more. They c<strong>an</strong> detect issues <strong>an</strong>d give ideal<br />
solutions that are healthy. They<br />
underst<strong>an</strong>d the required tests that<br />
products must undergo before<br />
sell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d they stick by it.<br />
From <strong>example</strong>, our curriculum<br />
at COC follows FDA (Food <strong>an</strong>d<br />
Drug Adm<strong>in</strong>istration) st<strong>an</strong>dards<br />
of mak<strong>in</strong>g products <strong>an</strong>d because<br />
of that, products from our<br />
alumni c<strong>an</strong> compete <strong>an</strong>ywhere<br />
<strong>in</strong> the world.<br />
Well-tra<strong>in</strong>ed beauty<br />
entrepreneurs make the safest<br />
<strong>an</strong>d most effective products.<br />
Our alumni are not<br />
roadside mixologists or<br />
pro-mixers. They<br />
know why each<br />
<strong>in</strong>gredient is<br />
used <strong>an</strong>d why<br />
every<br />
We raise beauty<br />
entrepreneurs. We<br />
do this by<br />
impart<strong>in</strong>g them<br />
with required<br />
formulation skill<br />
before giv<strong>in</strong>g them<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>ess direction<br />
on how to launch<br />
beauty bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />
<strong>an</strong>d sell<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
products that they<br />
learned to make<br />
s<strong>in</strong>gle step is taken <strong>in</strong><br />
production; they are<br />
scientifically sound<br />
formulators.”<br />
Do you offer <strong>an</strong>y career<br />
services or job placement<br />
assist<strong>an</strong>ce to those who<br />
pass through COC?<br />
We f<strong>in</strong>d that we attract<br />
students that simply w<strong>an</strong>t<br />
to learn, then go on to own<br />
bus<strong>in</strong>esses. For that, we<br />
help teach them the<br />
necessary skills <strong>an</strong>d<br />
provide coach<strong>in</strong>g support<br />
through the process.<br />
Last year, we opened up<br />
opportunities that<br />
witnessed the recruitment<br />
of some of our past<br />
students as <strong>in</strong>structors.<br />
This year, we’ll be<br />
travell<strong>in</strong>g out for two<br />
major beauty trade shows <strong>in</strong> Dubai <strong>an</strong>d<br />
Ist<strong>an</strong>bul, strictly with past students so they c<strong>an</strong><br />
exhibit their products, meet buyers, stockists,<br />
get new clientele <strong>an</strong>d expose their products to<br />
the <strong>in</strong>ternational market.<br />
We also pl<strong>an</strong> on tak<strong>in</strong>g adv<strong>an</strong>tage of local<br />
trade shows <strong>in</strong> Nigeria <strong>an</strong>d other countries <strong>in</strong><br />
Africa.<br />
Aside the trade shows, we have<br />
developed a new excit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
support product that would<br />
adv<strong>an</strong>ce the careers of our<br />
graduates; that’s our beauty<br />
resource magaz<strong>in</strong>e which<br />
we hope to launch <strong>in</strong> a few<br />
weeks.<br />
We also have a beauty<br />
tour slated for next<br />
month, February 1 to 11<br />
precisely, <strong>in</strong> which we<br />
will be travell<strong>in</strong>g with<br />
10 amaz<strong>in</strong>g students to<br />
the city of Dubai.<br />
This will enable<br />
them explore the<br />
cosmetic <strong>in</strong>dustry from<br />
<strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
perspective.<br />
Dur<strong>in</strong>g this tour,<br />
students will be learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from three of U.A.E’s<br />
experts <strong>in</strong> the field of<br />
soap mak<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
perfumery <strong>an</strong>d scented<br />
c<strong>an</strong>dles. They will be<br />
explor<strong>in</strong>g Dubai’s raw<br />
material market,<br />
luxury packag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
options <strong>an</strong>d aesthetics.<br />
They would explore the<br />
history of Arabi<strong>an</strong><br />
perfumery from the<br />
archives that have been <strong>set</strong><br />
up <strong>in</strong> the Dubai perfume<br />
museum. Imag<strong>in</strong>e learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
formulas from generations<br />
before us just by read<strong>in</strong>g their<br />
notes stored <strong>in</strong> a precious<br />
place.<br />
This tour will be a total<br />
exposure to the billion dollar<br />
cosmetic <strong>in</strong>dustry from a<br />
different light.<br />
Why Dubai?<br />
We chose Dubai for a number<br />
of reasons.<br />
First, it’s easy to get a visa for a<br />
group, no long requirements <strong>an</strong>d the city<br />
is beautiful.<br />
Second, perfumery is part of the UAE culture.<br />
Their knowledge is wide <strong>in</strong> the art of<br />
perfumery. So, gett<strong>in</strong>g our formulators to tap<br />
from their knowledge is a big deal worth<br />
celebrat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Third, they have <strong>an</strong> accessible market where<br />
one c<strong>an</strong> get a variety of raw materials <strong>in</strong><br />
abund<strong>an</strong>ce. Great packag<strong>in</strong>g, great<br />
<strong>in</strong>gredients <strong>an</strong>d very underst<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g sellers that<br />
would be will<strong>in</strong>g to ship to <strong>an</strong>y particip<strong>an</strong>t’s<br />
base often.<br />
As <strong>an</strong> entrepreneur, what is non-negotiable<br />
to you?<br />
First, my values. I don’t compromise on my<br />
values <strong>an</strong>d I have a lot of them. An <strong>example</strong> is<br />
quality over qu<strong>an</strong>tity; I’ll rather work with one<br />
solid th<strong>in</strong>g th<strong>an</strong> a bunch of mediocre th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Second, failure is not <strong>an</strong> option. Either we<br />
w<strong>in</strong> or we figure out a way to w<strong>in</strong>, then w<strong>in</strong>.<br />
Failure is not <strong>in</strong> my dictionary.<br />
Also, I c<strong>an</strong> never negotiate on client<br />
satisfaction. I do everyth<strong>in</strong>g hum<strong>an</strong>ly possible<br />
with<strong>in</strong> my pr<strong>in</strong>ciples to ensure a client is<br />
satisfied <strong>an</strong>d gets whatever value promised.
