National Sports Festival:<br />
Edo should not<br />
be host<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
w<strong>in</strong> – Izile<strong>in</strong><br />
•Says I should not be<br />
punished for Falcons protest<br />
•Local coaches should not be<br />
relegated<br />
Godw<strong>in</strong> Izile<strong>in</strong>, hav<strong>in</strong>g served <strong>in</strong> various coach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
capacities with the Golden Eagles <strong>an</strong>d Super<br />
Falcons is em<strong>in</strong>ently qualified to comment on sport<strong>in</strong>g<br />
issues <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong> this <strong>in</strong>terview with JOHN EGBOKHAN, the<br />
AWCON w<strong>in</strong>ner opens up on the <strong>in</strong>justice he is fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>an</strong>d why Edo State should forget the idea of host<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
w<strong>in</strong> the National Sports Festival.<br />
I saw you at the Annual<br />
General Meet<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />
Nigeria Football Federation <strong>in</strong><br />
Ben<strong>in</strong> City. What <strong>was</strong> your<br />
mission there?<br />
Ans: I went there not as <strong>an</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>vited personality, I do not<br />
w<strong>an</strong>t to be seen as <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>terloper<br />
but because some of my friends<br />
were there <strong>an</strong>d I felt that I<br />
should make out time to come<br />
<strong>an</strong>d see few friends like Bitrus<br />
Bewer<strong>an</strong>g. I saw them, They<br />
were busy <strong>an</strong>d we later met the<br />
follow<strong>in</strong>g day.<br />
What are you presently<br />
do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Edo State.<br />
Briefly, I <strong>was</strong> with the female<br />
team for one season. I am out<br />
of that place now, I am a<br />
consult<strong>an</strong>t to about four<br />
youth teams. It’s not<br />
the money that really<br />
matters but my<br />
<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> the game<br />
is genu<strong>in</strong>e <strong>an</strong>d<br />
unfail<strong>in</strong>g. I am still<br />
strong enough to<br />
impact my<br />
knowledge<br />
to them<br />
<strong>an</strong>d<br />
they<br />
are<br />
very<br />
happy<br />
to<br />
have<br />
•Oshoala<br />
me around them.<br />
And then aga<strong>in</strong>, I am<br />
<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
team that will be compet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
the forthcom<strong>in</strong>g National<br />
Sports Festival, Edo 2022 <strong>in</strong><br />
Ben<strong>in</strong> City. We have the female<br />
team that will participate <strong>in</strong> the<br />
competition <strong>an</strong>d I have told<br />
them what we should do to get<br />
prepared for the festival <strong>an</strong>d<br />
not just to w<strong>in</strong> but to do well.<br />
Do you really th<strong>in</strong>k that Edo<br />
c<strong>an</strong> do well at the forthcom<strong>in</strong>g<br />
National Sports Festival or are<br />
we host<strong>in</strong>g to w<strong>in</strong> the Games<br />
start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> March?<br />
I am not go<strong>in</strong>g for that. I<br />
th<strong>in</strong>k we should host to<br />
participate fully, get the best<br />
out of the athletes, not only<br />
to represent Edo State but<br />
to represent the nation.<br />
That is the essence of<br />
the National Sports<br />
Festival. It is not about<br />
host<strong>in</strong>g to w<strong>in</strong>. That is a<br />
ruse. I do not believe <strong>in</strong><br />
it.<br />
Host<strong>in</strong>g to w<strong>in</strong> is not<br />
the essence of the<br />
National Sports Festival. To<br />
w<strong>in</strong> at all cost without<br />
adequate preparations leads to<br />
teams do<strong>in</strong>g a lot of untoward<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
But aga<strong>in</strong>, the state is<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g hard to make sure that<br />
our participation is a<br />
remarkable one. That is exactly<br />
what I see them do<strong>in</strong>g. Godw<strong>in</strong><br />
Dudu Orumen is around<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g hard, the Deputy<br />
Governor Philip Shaibu is fully<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved, the State Governor,<br />
Godw<strong>in</strong> Obaseki is equally very<br />
<strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> it, so we would not<br />
have cause to say there is no<br />
money for us to prepare the<br />
athletes of Edo State. I<br />
th<strong>in</strong>k the athletes are<br />
work<strong>in</strong>g hard <strong>an</strong>d<br />
tenaciously too, to<br />
ensure success for<br />
the state at the<br />
festival.<br />
Hav<strong>in</strong>g previously coached<br />
the Golden Eaglets <strong>an</strong>d the<br />
Super Falcons, which you<br />
t<strong>in</strong>kered to success at the<br />
Afric<strong>an</strong> Women’s Nations Cup<br />
•Izile<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> South Africa m<strong>an</strong>y years<br />
ago, it is safe to say that you<br />
recorded successes with these<br />
teams but these days, such<br />
successes are difficult to come<br />
by, lead<strong>in</strong>g me to probe what<br />
your thoughts are on these<br />
teams at the World Cups,<br />
where they crashed out <strong>in</strong> the<br />
second round. Or do you th<strong>in</strong>k<br />
Nigeri<strong>an</strong>s are overbear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
their expectations from these<br />
teams?<br />
I th<strong>in</strong>k seriously that if we<br />
w<strong>an</strong>t to be fair to everybody, we<br />
start from the NFF, the<br />
m<strong>an</strong>agement, they were<br />
burdened with crisis from the<br />
first day they got elected. They<br />
were not able to properly<br />
m<strong>an</strong>age these teams, even<br />
though they did their best but it<br />
<strong>was</strong> always go<strong>in</strong>g to be difficult<br />
because of the m<strong>an</strong>y court cases<br />
<strong>an</strong>d battles they had to contend<br />
with.<br />
Send<strong>in</strong>g the team out to go<br />
<strong>an</strong>d play is one th<strong>in</strong>g but<br />
m<strong>an</strong>ag<strong>in</strong>g them is <strong>an</strong>other<br />
matter entirely. Because of the<br />
crisis they had at h<strong>an</strong>d, try<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to defend themselves from<br />
those spurious <strong>an</strong>d frivolous<br />
fraud <strong>an</strong>d scam cases, it <strong>was</strong><br />
not unexpected that the teams<br />
later suffered.<br />
They were not<br />
able to give the<br />
utmost<br />
attention to<br />
them even<br />
though they<br />
gave the teams<br />
all they needed<br />
but those<br />
negative vibes<br />
affected the<br />
teams.<br />
So you are<br />
absolv<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
NFF of <strong>an</strong>y<br />
fault <strong>in</strong> the<br />
teams poor<br />
perform<strong>an</strong>ces?<br />
Yes. I c<strong>an</strong>not<br />
blame them<br />
because a head<br />
that is not<br />
<strong>set</strong>tled would<br />
A lot of<br />
<strong>in</strong>terested<br />
parties were<br />
unfairly<br />
blam<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
NFF for a<br />
problem,<br />
which <strong>was</strong> not<br />
a fault of<br />
theirs<br />
def<strong>in</strong>itely not have the power or<br />
ability to tend for the various<br />
members of its body. A lot of<br />
<strong>in</strong>terested parties were unfairly<br />
blam<strong>in</strong>g the NFF for a<br />
problem, which <strong>was</strong> not a fault<br />
of theirs. They me<strong>an</strong>t well for<br />
the teams <strong>an</strong>d that <strong>was</strong> why<br />
they gave them the best of<br />
preparations but what <strong>was</strong><br />
miss<strong>in</strong>g <strong>was</strong> the guid<strong>an</strong>ce,<br />
monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d follow-up,<br />
•Ordega<br />
which<br />
were<br />
impossible<br />
to achieve<br />
under the hostile<br />
environment they<br />
operated <strong>in</strong>. A lot of<br />
critics went after the NFF<br />
for what <strong>was</strong> not their fault.<br />
They were too hard on<br />
them. It <strong>was</strong> most unfair.<br />
They are still attack<strong>in</strong>g<br />
them, which is really<br />
unnecessary.<br />
And you feel that<br />
now that the court<br />
has thrown out the<br />
corruption case<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st NFF, its<br />
President, Amaju<br />
P<strong>in</strong>nick <strong>an</strong>d the<br />
other accused top<br />
executives, that<br />
these attacks<br />
should stop, hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
been given a cle<strong>an</strong><br />
bill of health by a<br />
competent court of<br />
legal jurisdiction?<br />
But some persons<br />
the other day came<br />
out with <strong>an</strong>other<br />
frivolous<br />
accusation aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />
the NFF. They said<br />
that they are a<br />
group of lawyers. I<br />
don’t know what<br />
their true motive is<br />
because s<strong>in</strong>ce the court has<br />
given a verdict <strong>an</strong>d the federal<br />
government has withdrawn the<br />
case aga<strong>in</strong>st the NFF officers,<br />
then I th<strong>in</strong>k the matter is over<br />
<strong>an</strong>d should be rested <strong>an</strong>d never<br />
raised aga<strong>in</strong>. This is so that we<br />
c<strong>an</strong> forge ahead <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d not<br />
have a repeat of what happened<br />
not too long ago which ended<br />
affect<strong>in</strong>g our teams<br />
perform<strong>an</strong>ces at <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />
competitions. Like I po<strong>in</strong>ted out<br />
earlier, you c<strong>an</strong>’t have crisis<br />
without pay<strong>in</strong>g the price one<br />
way or the other.<br />
I heard that you were be<strong>in</strong>g<br />
owed your Nations Cup<br />
allow<strong>an</strong>ces from South Africa<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004. Have you been<br />
paid by the NFF?<br />
If I th<strong>in</strong>k of it, I would not<br />
w<strong>an</strong>t to forgive this present<br />
officials of NFF, particularly<br />
President, Amaju P<strong>in</strong>nick.<br />
Amaju came to Ben<strong>in</strong> about a<br />
year ago to <strong>an</strong>nounce to the<br />
government that they were<br />
ow<strong>in</strong>g me <strong>an</strong>d that they would<br />
pay. But as I am talk<strong>in</strong>g to you<br />
now, no kobo has been given<br />
me. They promised but<br />
noth<strong>in</strong>g has been done.<br />
I have been mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
passionate entreaties<br />
for them to pay but<br />
noth<strong>in</strong>g has<br />
happened.<br />
They paid my girls<br />
<strong>an</strong>d other members of<br />
the team but refused to<br />
pay me. I don’t know<br />
why they have not paid<br />
me. I <strong>was</strong> the one who<br />
stopped the crisis <strong>in</strong><br />
South Africa from<br />
escalat<strong>in</strong>g beyond the<br />
po<strong>in</strong>t it got to. I <strong>was</strong> the<br />
one who prevailed on the<br />
girls not to go further<br />
th<strong>an</strong> what they did at the<br />
tournament.<br />
P<strong>in</strong>nick came here <strong>an</strong>d<br />
gave his speech <strong>an</strong>d there<br />
<strong>was</strong> a st<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g ovation<br />
for him but government is<br />
yet to pay me my $12,<br />
000. But I am tell<strong>in</strong>g<br />
you as my younger<br />
brother that I believe<br />
they are sav<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
money for me .<br />
I will get the money<br />
by the grace of God<br />
because I worked for<br />
it, I sweated for it. I<br />
did my best for the<br />
nation <strong>an</strong>d won the<br />
Cup for the country<br />
<strong>an</strong>d see no reason<br />
why I should be<br />
punished for<br />
someth<strong>in</strong>g I<br />
know noth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
about.<br />
As<br />
someone<br />
who has been<br />
at the helm of two<br />
national teams <strong>an</strong>d<br />
t<strong>in</strong>kered them to glorious<br />
heights, what do you th<strong>in</strong>k<br />
should be done to get our<br />
teams back on w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g ways?<br />
We should create sixgeopolitical<br />
sports zones <strong>in</strong><br />
order to properly identify,<br />
groom <strong>an</strong>d nurture athletes <strong>in</strong>to<br />
stars, who would now be<br />
selected <strong>in</strong>to the national<br />
teams. We should <strong>in</strong>volve<br />
everybody <strong>an</strong>d tap <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
wealth of experience of coaches<br />
<strong>an</strong>d athletes who are based<br />
abroad for national<br />
development.<br />
So you are not aga<strong>in</strong>st hir<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of foreigners to m<strong>an</strong>age our<br />
teams like the Super Falcons?<br />
Not at all, especially if the<br />
nation feels they c<strong>an</strong> afford<br />
them to m<strong>an</strong>age our teams to<br />
glory. But they should do this<br />
without relegat<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
<strong>in</strong>digenous coaches to the<br />
background or mak<strong>in</strong>g our own<br />
coaches to feel unw<strong>an</strong>ted <strong>an</strong>d<br />
<strong>in</strong>sufficient. I am one of those<br />
people who believe that if we<br />
put the <strong>in</strong>digenous coaches<br />
alongside the foreigners to<br />
work together that we c<strong>an</strong><br />
achieve greatness for our<br />
national teams. There would be<br />
tr<strong>an</strong>sfer of knowledge from<br />
both parties <strong>an</strong>d the players<br />
would be the biggest<br />
beneficiaries on the long run.<br />
That is the way to go <strong>an</strong>d I hope<br />
our adm<strong>in</strong>istrators would stick<br />
with this model of coach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
arr<strong>an</strong>gement.
