As a new believer, the<br />
Lord asked me one of<br />
his <strong>in</strong>trigu<strong>in</strong>g questions. He<br />
said: “Femi, would you like<br />
to be a prophet?”<br />
I did not <strong>an</strong>swer. The last<br />
th<strong>in</strong>g I w<strong>an</strong>ted to be <strong>was</strong> a<br />
prophet. I saw no glory <strong>in</strong> it<br />
but problems <strong>an</strong>d difficulties.<br />
Later, I addressed the question<br />
<strong>in</strong>directly. I told the Lord<br />
I did not w<strong>an</strong>t the m<strong>in</strong>istry of<br />
Isaiah. To me, Isaiah’s m<strong>in</strong>istry<br />
is frustrat<strong>in</strong>g. He is called<br />
to preach to people who will<br />
not receive his word.<br />
God says: “Go <strong>an</strong>d speak<br />
this message to the people:<br />
‘You will listen <strong>an</strong>d listen, but<br />
never underst<strong>an</strong>d. You will<br />
look <strong>an</strong>d look, but never see.<br />
Make these people stubborn!<br />
Make them stop up their ears,<br />
cover their eyes, <strong>an</strong>d fail to<br />
underst<strong>an</strong>d. Don't let them<br />
turn to me <strong>an</strong>d be healed.’”<br />
(Isaiah 6:9-10).<br />
Little did I know that Isaiah’s<br />
is the only m<strong>in</strong>istry for<br />
preachers.<br />
Except you repent<br />
LUKE 13:1-5 says:<br />
“There were present<br />
at that season some<br />
that told him of the Galilae<strong>an</strong>s,<br />
whose blood Pilate had<br />
m<strong>in</strong>gled with their sacrifices.<br />
2 And Jesus <strong>an</strong>swer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
said unto them, Suppose ye<br />
that these Galilae<strong>an</strong>s were<br />
s<strong>in</strong>ners above all the Galilae<strong>an</strong>s,<br />
because they suffered<br />
such th<strong>in</strong>gs? 3 I tell<br />
you, Nay: but, except ye repent,<br />
ye shall all likewise<br />
perish. 4 Or those eighteen<br />
upon whom the tower <strong>in</strong> Siloam<br />
fell, <strong>an</strong>d slew them,<br />
th<strong>in</strong>k ye that they were s<strong>in</strong>ners<br />
above all men that<br />
dwelt <strong>in</strong> Jerusalem? 5 I tell<br />
you, Nay: but, except ye repent,<br />
ye shall all likewise<br />
perish”.<br />
The above Scriptural<br />
verses are div<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>struction<br />
expected to be obeyed by<br />
every be<strong>in</strong>g. God repeatedly<br />
<strong>in</strong>structed that people<br />
should make haste to repent<br />
or be destroyed.<br />
Every good preacher of<br />
the gospel knows that people<br />
don't like hear<strong>in</strong>g about<br />
repent<strong>an</strong>ce, thus some are<br />
afraid to preach it because<br />
they don’t w<strong>an</strong>t to br<strong>in</strong>g disturb<strong>in</strong>g<br />
news to their audience.<br />
The truth is that the gospel<br />
is good news, but <strong>an</strong><br />
awful news to the s<strong>in</strong>ner.<br />
Therefore every preacher<br />
Lack of Credentials<br />
The call<strong>in</strong>g of a prophet<br />
does not arise from a careers’<br />
advisory council. The wise<br />
men asked: “Where is he that<br />
is born k<strong>in</strong>g of the Jews?”<br />
(Matthew 2:2). Jesus <strong>was</strong> not<br />
born: Jesus is born. He is born<br />
every day <strong>in</strong> the hearts <strong>an</strong>d<br />
m<strong>in</strong>ds of his followers.<br />
Similarly, a prophet is born<br />
<strong>an</strong>d not m<strong>an</strong>-made. God says<br />
to Jeremiah: “Before I<br />
formed you <strong>in</strong> the womb, I<br />
knew you; before you were<br />
born, I s<strong>an</strong>ctified you; I orda<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
you a prophet to the<br />
nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5).<br />
False prophets graduate<br />
from the schools of the prophets.<br />
They have scholarly degrees<br />
<strong>in</strong> Div<strong>in</strong>ity. They are<br />
widely-accepted <strong>an</strong>d welcome<br />
<strong>in</strong> Aso Rock. They tell<br />
the people <strong>an</strong>d the powersthat-be<br />
what they w<strong>an</strong>t to<br />
hear.<br />
But the true prophets are a<br />
completely different kettle of<br />
fish. They have no earthly<br />
credentials. They learn at the<br />
feet of the Lord himself <strong>in</strong> the<br />
School of the Holy Spirit.<br />
This puts them <strong>in</strong>evitably at<br />
loggerheads with the establishment<br />
who question <strong>an</strong>d<br />
challenge their authority.<br />
(Matthew 21:23).<br />
Amos says: “I <strong>was</strong> no prophet,<br />
nor <strong>was</strong> I a prophet's son.<br />
But I <strong>was</strong> a herdsm<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d a<br />
gatherer from sycamore<br />
trees. And Jehovah took me<br />
from beh<strong>in</strong>d the flock, <strong>an</strong>d Jehovah<br />
said to me, Go, prophesy<br />
to my people Israel.”<br />
(Amos 7:14-15).<br />
that loves souls must preach<br />
about repent<strong>an</strong>ce, of salvation,<br />
because the word of<br />
God teaches that until one<br />
realizes that he is born <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>,<br />
thus bound for hell, that he<br />
has no hope, that God's<br />
wrath abides upon his head<br />
if he refuses to repent <strong>an</strong>d<br />
except he repents he will not<br />
escape the wrath of God.<br />
Of a truth m<strong>an</strong>y do not like<br />
to be told they are s<strong>in</strong>ners.<br />
They do not w<strong>an</strong>t to hear<br />
about repent<strong>an</strong>ce. They<br />
w<strong>an</strong>t to listen to sermon<br />
where they will be told that<br />
God is good <strong>an</strong>d merciful. A<br />
good sermon as far as they<br />
are concerned is one where<br />
the preacher talks mostly on<br />
God’s goodness <strong>an</strong>d mercy.<br />
They would like to be<br />
blessed as Abraham but are<br />
not ready to go by the righteousness<br />
of Abraham.<br />
M<strong>an</strong>y people who claim<br />
they are Christi<strong>an</strong>s because<br />
they pay heavy tithes <strong>an</strong>d<br />
give offer<strong>in</strong>g of big envelope<br />
but are <strong>in</strong>to evil will not<br />
w<strong>an</strong>t pastor to preach<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st the source of their<br />
wealth. Some of them are<br />
smugglers, some have beer<br />
parlour <strong>an</strong>d shares <strong>in</strong> breweries,<br />
some enriched themselves<br />
through bribery <strong>an</strong>d<br />
corruption, some deal on<br />
contrab<strong>an</strong>d, alcohol, cigarettes,<br />
some are <strong>in</strong>to robbery,<br />
fraud, kidnapp<strong>in</strong>g, extortion,<br />
The stripes of a prophet<br />
The earthquakes <strong>an</strong>d<br />
tsunami floods are<br />
breed<strong>in</strong>g grounds for<br />
m<strong>an</strong>y a prophet<br />
Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g ground<br />
They are not all prophets<br />
that are prophets. Most of<br />
the so-called prophets of today<br />
are self-made. Jesus<br />
warns: “Watch out for false<br />
prophets! They dress up like<br />
sheep, but <strong>in</strong>side they are<br />
wolves who have come to attack<br />
you. You c<strong>an</strong> tell what<br />
they are by what they do.”<br />
(Matthew 7:15-16).<br />
The prophet of God is emptied<br />
of self. Moses spent forty years<br />
cocooned <strong>in</strong> the wilderness. The<br />
Lord takes us through the fire so<br />
we would know we c<strong>an</strong>not be<br />
burned. He takes us through the<br />
waters so we would know we c<strong>an</strong>not<br />
drown.<br />
The earthquakes <strong>an</strong>d tsunami<br />
floods are breed<strong>in</strong>g grounds for<br />
m<strong>an</strong>y a prophet. A thous<strong>an</strong>d may<br />
fall at our side <strong>an</strong>d ten thous<strong>an</strong>d<br />
at our right h<strong>an</strong>d, but we are preserved<br />
for a special purpose <strong>in</strong><br />
God.<br />
The true prophet is bereft of personal<br />
agenda. He is not allowed<br />
to have a life of his own. God <strong>in</strong>structed<br />
Hosea to marry a prostitute<br />
<strong>in</strong> order to send through him<br />
the message of Israel’s unfaithfulness<br />
<strong>an</strong>d harlotry. Jeremiah <strong>was</strong><br />
denied the comforts of marriage.<br />
Ezekiel <strong>was</strong> bereaved of his beloved<br />
wife as a sign to Israel. Isaiah<br />
also had his message written<br />
on the papyrus of his life. He says:<br />
“Behold, I <strong>an</strong>d the children whom<br />
the LORD has given me are for<br />
signs <strong>an</strong>d for wonders <strong>in</strong> Israel.”<br />
(Isaiah 8:18).<br />
while some are <strong>in</strong>to wrong<br />
marriages, fornication,<br />
adultery <strong>an</strong>d prostitution.<br />
And none of these s<strong>in</strong>ners<br />
w<strong>an</strong>t their s<strong>in</strong> to be mentioned,<br />
otherwise the Pastor<br />
must be ?removed or<br />
they would leave the<br />
church. They have the<br />
habit of com<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
church late <strong>an</strong>d leav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
before dismissal because<br />
they have to attend<br />
k<strong>in</strong>dred meet<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>an</strong>d<br />
other bus<strong>in</strong>ess appo<strong>in</strong>tment.<br />
Any attempt by the<br />
Pastor to admonish<br />
them will be met with<br />
stiff resist<strong>an</strong>ce.<br />
If you are among these<br />
categories of s<strong>in</strong>ners, the<br />
Lord is bidd<strong>in</strong>g me to tell<br />
you today that except<br />
you repent from these<br />
s<strong>in</strong>s, except you let go<br />
with your wickedness,<br />
you will surely perish. It<br />
does not matter your position<br />
<strong>in</strong> the church or society,<br />
if you refuse to give<br />
heed to the Lord’s warn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
on repent<strong>an</strong>ce today,<br />
you will likewise perish.<br />
God has <strong>set</strong> before us life<br />
<strong>an</strong>d death, good <strong>an</strong>d<br />
evil, <strong>an</strong>d put us to our<br />
choice. Repent therefore<br />
from your s<strong>in</strong> otherwise<br />
you perish. God is not a<br />
respecter of person. He<br />
says that the soul that<br />
s<strong>in</strong>s shall die.<br />
Proverbial Jonah<br />
One day, after read<strong>in</strong>g<br />
the prophets far <strong>in</strong>to the<br />
night, I f<strong>in</strong>ally told the<br />
Lord I <strong>was</strong> go<strong>in</strong>g to bed.<br />
But not before engag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
him on the m<strong>in</strong>d-boggl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
issue of Jonah. I<br />
said: “Father, how did<br />
you keep a m<strong>an</strong> alive <strong>in</strong><br />
the belly of a fish? Your<br />
ways are truly unsearchable.”<br />
I went upstairs <strong>in</strong>to my<br />
bedroom. As soon as my<br />
body touched the bed, the<br />
heavens were opened. To<br />
my astonishment, I found<br />
myself under the sea-bed,<br />
enclosed <strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong> air bubble.<br />
I watched as the procession<br />
of <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>credible array<br />
of fishes of different<br />
designs <strong>an</strong>d architecture<br />
floated past, all <strong>in</strong> supernaturally<br />
deep colours;<br />
brightly lit by <strong>in</strong>c<strong>an</strong>descent<br />
light.<br />
There I <strong>was</strong>, a proverbial<br />
Jonah <strong>in</strong> the belly of<br />
a fish. The message <strong>was</strong><br />
simple even though I <strong>was</strong><br />
slow, as usual, on the uptake.<br />
When God calls you<br />
as a prophet to preach to<br />
N<strong>in</strong>eveh, you don’t decl<strong>in</strong>e<br />
<strong>an</strong>d go to Tarshish<br />
<strong>in</strong>stead.<br />
Heal<strong>in</strong>g stripes<br />
The life of a prophet is<br />
Pastor Oloruntimileh<strong>in</strong><br />
Joshua Daramola<br />
N a fateful day a member<br />
Oof my m<strong>in</strong>istry walked up<br />
to me, <strong>an</strong>d w<strong>an</strong>ted to know why I<br />
gave a gift to <strong>an</strong>other member. I<br />
took time to expla<strong>in</strong> the reason<br />
beh<strong>in</strong>d my action. I told him that<br />
I would always acknowledge,<br />
recognise <strong>an</strong>d encourage <strong>an</strong>y<br />
person that f<strong>in</strong>d space <strong>in</strong> his or<br />
her heart to render help to the<br />
needy or contribute to the development<br />
<strong>an</strong>d growth of the m<strong>in</strong>istry<br />
of Jesus Christ.<br />
While we were discuss<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>an</strong>other<br />
member walked <strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong>d jo<strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> the discourse. Incidentally he<br />
mentioned the person <strong>in</strong> question<br />
deserved the gift because he<br />
had touched the lives of our needy<br />
members. It is imperative to talk<br />
<strong>an</strong>d mention what people do <strong>an</strong>d<br />
their positive contributions, so<br />
that others c<strong>an</strong> learn <strong>an</strong>d emulate<br />
them.<br />
There is reward for do<strong>in</strong>g well.<br />
I also implore people do<strong>in</strong>g <strong>bad</strong><br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs to desist; if they refra<strong>in</strong><br />
from do<strong>in</strong>g evil, then they would<br />
def<strong>in</strong>itely reap its reward. It is just<br />
like how every <strong>in</strong>ventor is never<br />
his m<strong>in</strong>istry. God requires the<br />
two to be identical. He said to<br />
me: “Femi, noth<strong>in</strong>g that will<br />
ever happen to you will be co<strong>in</strong>cidental.<br />
Noth<strong>in</strong>g will ever<br />
happen to you by happenst<strong>an</strong>ce.<br />
Everyth<strong>in</strong>g that will<br />
happen <strong>in</strong> your life will happen<br />
for a reason.”<br />
Therefore, if a lady is called<br />
to a heal<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>istry, ask her<br />
what major sickness has ever<br />
befallen her. At <strong>an</strong>y rate, there<br />
must have been a miracle heal<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> her life. If a m<strong>an</strong> claims<br />
to be <strong>in</strong> a deliver<strong>an</strong>ce m<strong>in</strong>istry,<br />
ask him how m<strong>an</strong>y demons<br />
came out of him.<br />
The prophet’s messages<br />
come out of his life. They are<br />
fashioned from his day-to-day<br />
experiences. They are the<br />
product of the str<strong>an</strong>ge, pa<strong>in</strong>ful<br />
<strong>an</strong>d exact<strong>in</strong>g ways whereby<br />
God touches every facet of<br />
our lives <strong>an</strong>d br<strong>in</strong>gs us to noth<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
But more th<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>yth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
else, a true prophet is a burden-bearer.<br />
We are weighed<br />
down by the tr<strong>an</strong>sgressions we<br />
decry; frustrated <strong>in</strong> the knowledge<br />
that few will believe our<br />
report.<br />
Isaiah writes: “Surely he has<br />
borne our griefs <strong>an</strong>d carried<br />
our sorrows; yet we esteemed<br />
him stricken, smitten by God,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d afflicted. But he <strong>was</strong><br />
wounded for our tr<strong>an</strong>sgressions,<br />
he <strong>was</strong> bruised for our<br />
<strong>in</strong>iquities; the chastisement<br />
for our peace <strong>was</strong> upon him,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d by his stripes we are<br />
healed.” (Isaiah 53:4-5).<br />
This scripture is messi<strong>an</strong>ic.<br />
But it is also referr<strong>in</strong>g to<br />
the prophetic m<strong>in</strong>istry <strong>in</strong><br />
general. I used to read messi<strong>an</strong>ic<br />
scriptures <strong>an</strong>d relate<br />
them exclusively to Christ.<br />
Until one day, the Lord<br />
spoke one directly to me. I<br />
thought: “But this is talk<strong>in</strong>g<br />
about Jesus.” But the Lord<br />
said to me: “Femi, it is also<br />
talk<strong>in</strong>g about you.”<br />
I presumed it me<strong>an</strong>t I<br />
would travel the world as <strong>an</strong><br />
it<strong>in</strong>er<strong>an</strong>t preacher, but that<br />
<strong>was</strong> not the Lord’s <strong>in</strong>tention.<br />
Fifteen years after I received<br />
the word, the World Wide<br />
Web came of age <strong>an</strong>d I started<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>g articles of faith<br />
on <strong>in</strong>ternet posts. Suddenly,<br />
I discovered I could be <strong>an</strong><br />
it<strong>in</strong>er<strong>an</strong>t preacher even<br />
while sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> my bedroom.<br />
If you are read<strong>in</strong>g this, then<br />
this scripture the Lord spoke<br />
<strong>in</strong>to my life is fulfilled <strong>in</strong> your<br />
hear<strong>in</strong>g:<br />
“Listen, O coastl<strong>an</strong>ds, to<br />
me, <strong>an</strong>d take heed, you peoples<br />
from afar! The LORD<br />
has called me from the<br />
womb; from the matrix of<br />
my mother he has made<br />
mention of my name. And<br />
he has made my mouth like<br />
a sharp sword; <strong>in</strong> the shadow<br />
of his h<strong>an</strong>d he has hidden<br />
me, <strong>an</strong>d made me a polished<br />
shaft; <strong>in</strong> his quiver he<br />
has hidden me. And he said<br />
to me, ‘You are my serv<strong>an</strong>t,<br />
O Israel, <strong>in</strong> whom I will be<br />
glorified’” (Isaiah 49:1-3).<br />
Why a Christi<strong>an</strong> should be generous<br />
forgotten, whether a person<br />
does good or <strong>bad</strong>, he or she will<br />
be remembered <strong>in</strong> due time.<br />
The Bible tells us about a<br />
wom<strong>an</strong> who <strong>was</strong> very generous<br />
to the needy <strong>in</strong> her world.<br />
(Acts 9:36-42). It says "In Joppa<br />
there <strong>was</strong> a disciple named<br />
Tabitha (which, when tr<strong>an</strong>slated,<br />
is Dorcas); she <strong>was</strong> always<br />
do<strong>in</strong>g good <strong>an</strong>d help<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
poor. About that time she became<br />
sick <strong>an</strong>d died, <strong>an</strong>d her<br />
body <strong>was</strong> <strong>was</strong>hed <strong>an</strong>d placed<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong> upstairs room. Lydda <strong>was</strong><br />
near Joppa; so when the disciples<br />
heard that Peter <strong>was</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
Lydda, they sent two men to<br />
him <strong>an</strong>d urged, "Please come<br />
at once!". Peter went with them,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d when he arrived he <strong>was</strong><br />
taken upstairs to the room. All<br />
the widows stood around him<br />
cry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d show<strong>in</strong>g him the<br />
robes <strong>an</strong>d other cloth<strong>in</strong>g that<br />
Dorcas had made while she<br />
<strong>was</strong> still with them. Peter sent<br />
them all out of the room; then<br />
he got down on his knees <strong>an</strong>d<br />
prayed. Turn<strong>in</strong>g toward the<br />
dead wom<strong>an</strong>, he said, "Tabitha,<br />
get up." She opened her eyes,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d see<strong>in</strong>g Peter she sat up. He<br />
took her by the h<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d helped<br />
her to her feet. Then he called<br />
for the believers, especially the<br />
widows, <strong>an</strong>d presented her to<br />
them. This became known all<br />
over Joppa, <strong>an</strong>d m<strong>an</strong>y people<br />
believed <strong>in</strong> the Lord. Dorcas<br />
<strong>was</strong> filled with good deeds.<br />
But m<strong>an</strong>y people did not<br />
know she <strong>was</strong> do<strong>in</strong>g good<br />
th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
So, as a m<strong>in</strong>ister of God, I<br />
will always recognise people<br />
who lend a help<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>an</strong>d<br />
to the less-priviledged ones<br />
<strong>in</strong> the household of God.<br />
More so because the help<br />
rendered <strong>in</strong> house of God automatically<br />
me<strong>an</strong>s that they<br />
are help<strong>in</strong>g me to make<br />
people stay <strong>in</strong> the church for<br />
God to glorify Himself <strong>in</strong><br />
the peoples' lives.<br />
Brethren, we are created<br />
to help the needy among us.<br />
Whoever helps the needy<br />
does well <strong>an</strong>d it won't be out<br />
of place to acknowledge or<br />
recognise people who do<br />
well. I am implor<strong>in</strong>g every<br />
parent to teach their children<br />
to have generous heart<br />
of giv<strong>in</strong>g to people they<br />
know require assist<strong>an</strong>ce.<br />
Do not teach the children<br />
to be callous <strong>an</strong>d reproach<br />
the needy. The wom<strong>an</strong>, Dorcas,<br />
<strong>was</strong> remembered both<br />
<strong>in</strong> life <strong>an</strong>d death. She <strong>was</strong> so<br />
compassionate <strong>an</strong>d merciful<br />
that she <strong>was</strong> taken care<br />
of when she <strong>was</strong> ill, by the<br />
widows <strong>in</strong> Joppa. Her death<br />
<strong>was</strong> devastat<strong>in</strong>g to the widows<br />
that they started wail<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>an</strong>d mourn<strong>in</strong>g uncontrollably.<br />
