And as crazy as carnivalcan get, something that foreigners andoutsiders do not seem to get, is thatMardi Gras is very family friendly.There is nothing more exciting thangoing to Uptown, Downtown, or Mid-Citywith your children to enjoy the parades. My favorite parades towatch with them are Tucks, Thoth, and Endymion. For someonewho grew up in South America and used to love piñata time atkids’ parties, I often refer to the parades as rolling piñatas for thekids, where you can get all kinds of goodies. Which kid doesn’t lovethat?The Krewe of Red Beans is one that I will try this year becausethey are trying to be more inclusive with the addition of Krewe deMayahuel and Feijao. somos nolaKREWE of RED BEANShe Krewe of Red Beans began inT 2008 - and launched the first “beanparade’ on Lundi Gras 2009. Each year,Krewe members begin working on theirsuits after Halloween passes. On the bestMonday of the year (Lundi Gras, the daybefore Mardi Gras) they parade throughthe streets of the Marigny and Tremé.150 Krewe members parade alongsidethousands of “unofficial” paraders - andeveryone is welcome to make their ownbean suit and join in on the fun!The idea of the Krewe of Red BeansParade was to take inspiration fromdifferent elements of New Orleans culture:making a suit like an Indian and SecondLining like a Social Aid and Pleasure Club...and of course, to celebrate the culinarytradition of Red Beans on Monday!Friends and friends-of-friends wererecruited in 2008 and they began workingon their first suits. The original RedBeans parade (Marigny) will be a littlemore Caribbean and Mexican this year,as they welcome the Krewe of Mayahuel,a Mexican folkloric krewe that celebratesmexican traditions, and a Caribbean bandcreated by musician Cole Williams.Red Beans Parade - 2pm Lundi GrasDay - 725 St. Ferdinand (Marigny OperaHouse)And the newest sub-krewe, Feijao(beans in Portuguese)- a “Brazilian/cajun” parade is taking off this year inBywater. Feijao starts on Lundi Gras Dayat 2pm at Bud Rips Bar. All are welcome!Dead Beans Parade --Dead Beanswas launched in 2018, and it paradesnear Bayou St. John with music byPanorama Brass Band and Bon Vivant!The Dead Beans wear suits inspired byany mythological or folkloric traditionthat deals with death, mortality, or theafterlife, or paying homage to someonewho passed. This year’s theme ismythical or extinct animals.The Krewe of Red Beans welcomeseveryone in the community who wantsto participate.
