Paris 1741 – 1823
Sainte Famille
The Holy Family
Pierre noire, pinceau et lavis gris. Inscrit Bourdon au verso.
Black chalk, brush and grey wash. Inscribed Bourdon on the verso.
267 x 200 mm (10 1 /2 x 7 7 /8 in.)
1975.131.117).
The present Holy Family is characteristic of the graphic works of Callet and can be
compared to a certain number of drawings of this painter, who created numerous
prestigious decorations, such as Palazzo Serra in Geneva and Palais Bourbon in Paris.
The classical component of his compositions is well apparent, they always unfold in a
wide and equilibrated manner, as well as his square and well sketched faces. Joseph’s
face is amazingly similar to that of Jupiter in two most famous drawings of the artist
(Jupiter et Thétis, Ecole des Beaux Arts, 654 et Jupiter et Cérès, Metropolitan Museum
de New York, bequest of Harry G. Sperling, inv. 1975.131.117).
