Romanelli.
Showing the clear influence of Pietro da Cortona, the present drawing treats the story
of Jacob (Genesis 29-15-30) that the master equally treated in two paintings for the
Barberini, today in the Louvre and in the City Art Gallery, Bristol. His influence passed
down through his pupils to several generations of painters to such an extent that it
is difficult to make an attribution. The soft draughtsmanship and smooth gradation
of tones recall the manner of one of the most important Cortona’s pupils Giovanni
Francesco Romanelli.
