Pen and brown ink, brown wash over traces of black chalk, white highlights, over
brown preparation. Signed and dated Tom. Minardi f. 1818 at the lower right.
368 x 305 mm (14 ½ x 12 1 /16 in.)
This pupil of Vincenzo Camuccini and then of Antonio Canova was more a draughtsman
than a painter and used historical and literary subjects re-interpreting great subjects
of the Renaissance and Italian Classicism. Thus, this representation of St. George
somewhat evokes Raphael’s famous works on the same subject.
