Après sa formation auprès du directeur <strong>de</strong> l’Aca<strong>de</strong>́mie <strong>de</strong> France à Rome Jean François<br />
<strong>de</strong> Troy, Antoine <strong>de</strong> Favray s’installe à Malte et <strong>de</strong>vient frère servant dans l’ordre <strong>de</strong><br />
Saint-Jean <strong>de</strong> Jérusalem. Il peint <strong>de</strong> nombreux portraits <strong>de</strong> la société maltaise et <strong>de</strong>s<br />
comman<strong>de</strong>urs <strong>de</strong> l’ordre. Il accompagne à Constantinople La Couronne ottomane,<br />
navire capturé par <strong>de</strong>s chrétiens et rendu par le roi <strong>de</strong> France au sultan en gage<br />
d’amitié. Il reste huit années à Constantinople, pendant lesquelles il réalise <strong>de</strong>s portraits<br />
et <strong>de</strong>s scènes <strong>de</strong> la vie politique contemporaine.<br />
After training in Rome with the director of the French Aca<strong>de</strong>my in Rome Jean François<br />
<strong>de</strong> Troy, Antoine <strong>de</strong> Favray settled in Malta and became a friar of the or<strong>de</strong>r of<br />
St. James of Jerusalem. He painted numerous portraits of the Maltese society and<br />
comman<strong>de</strong>rs of the or<strong>de</strong>r. He sailed to Constantinople on the Corona Ottomana, the<br />
ship that was captured by the Christians and released to the Sultan by the King of<br />
France as a token of friendship. He stayed in Constantinople for eight ears, during<br />
which time he executed portraits and scenes of contemporary political life.<br />
