Landwirtschaft.
ateilzunehmen. Vielen Dank!
jobs like for example health workers, the police service
or farmers. But it was okay. I was happy to get back to
work, because I am in my last months.
In conclusion, I am very happy and thankful about
my voluntary year. It has really been a long way and
a very nice opportunity, because I have experienced a
lot and I have learnt a lot of things that will help me
in my future. And I think that I can apply them in my
daily life.
Once more I give a thumbs up: thank you very much
EWE (Eine Welt Engagement) for the opportunity of
me taking part in the exchange program.
Was macht eigentlich… Sangulukani
Was war damals deine Motivation, an diesem
Austauschprogramm teilzunehmen?
Also wollte ich selbst schauen, was davon stimmte.
Menschen dort eigentlich ganz normal waren.
Finding out what our former volunteers
do now: Sangulukani Phiri
Sangu: “This conversation was held while I was sitting
in a Caterpillar 777e Dump Truck at work, installing
the Fogmaker fire suppression system. I really enjoyed
talking about my experiences with the EWE again,
after a long time.”
When have you been in Germany as a volunteer?
I was in Germany in 2000 / 2001. That’s really a long
time ago.
What was your motivation to take part in the
exchange program?
I was in grade 8 when I thought about taking part in
the program, but at that time I never really bothered
about intercultural exchange. I just used to fantasize a
lot about Europe, and my phantasies were influenced
by the films I watched. I thought that maybe in Europe,
people are flying in futuristic cars, so I really wanted
to go and experience it myself.
When the opportunity came, I took it as a challenge
and got involved in language courses. When I then
finally was in Germany, I realized that people are
actually normal here. That they go for work, have their
own culture, they laugh, get upset and even know how
to party.
During the process of adapting I wanted to keep all
my experiences safe so that I could take some things I
learned back to Zambia. This process of learning was
wonderful to me.
How do you remember the experience of coming
back home?
Coming back home was extremely emotional for me.
The family I stayed with in Germany (up to now I
call them my German Mum and Dad) tried for me to
stay longer in Germany, because I was doing well in
school. My teacher and my friends in Germany were
very supportive. Unfortunately, the plan didn’t work
