The world has changed and we must
evolve! In order to reflect the times and
follow more closely some of the things we
believe in, VIVA NOLA has made the exciting
decision to become digital-only.
We care about the environment and we care about our audience.
During this pandemic, we found that our biggest asset is our digital
media! in order to reach our demographic audience more effectively,
we must focus on providing content in a timely manner through
our multiple platforms. Although we have a sentimental attachment
to print, we realized that our website vivanolamag.com, Facebook,
Instagram, and TV Show are the best way to share messages, to give
exposure to advertisers, and to reach a much broader audience!
After analyzing and evaluating our impact, it was a no brainer that
we must focus all our communications efforts in a digital format that
allows us to provide more written pieces on a regular basis and create
more community engagement with the additional content we provide
through video in our social media channels and the weekly VIVA NOLA
TV show that airs on local station WLAE.
Effective August 1st, 2020 VIVA NOLA changes its format and
becomes the best bilingual, multicultural platform that the New
Orleans area has seen! We know we have your support, and we are
grateful for it. We look forward to our “new normal” and to continue
to be the voice of the Latino community and the best link to connect
communities. And we will have a big announcement soon!

Our Communities

As I write this, George Floyd has just been laid to rest,
and Breonna Taylor would have been celebrating
another year of life. Sadly, they lost their lives to
senseless police brutality like many others before
them. So, I would like to dedicate this space to remind
readers to reflect on the struggles of those blacks being
oppressed in the United States and worldwide.
As an action step, I encourage you to support black
businesses and other communities of color. Visit blackowned
restaurants and donate to organizations that are
doing important work with children to inspire change.
Please pay attention to those in our food industry,
working to end systemic forms of racism that limit
access to fresh foods.
We share similarities in culture and our strong sense
of community. Daily, we fight systemic oppression
complexly linked to a history of slavery and colonization.
In a holistic approach to health, we cannot truly thrive if
one part of our life is out of balance. When a community
suffers, we suffer, and there can be no joy when a
person harbors hate and fear.
Systemic oppression also affects other marginalized
communities of color. In the chart are some local
organizations to explore. The list is not exhaustive. For

COVID-19 Has Reminded Us of the
Value of Our Green Spaces

The community
in New Orleans is
fortunate enough
to enjoy one of the
oldest urban parks in
the country. With more
than 1,300 hectares,
City Park offers a
unique experience
to millions of visitors
each year.
Viva NOLA Magazine - Page 8

COVID-19 affected
the way we interact in
our urban life. When our
theatres, concert centers,
restaurants, and cafes
were all forced to close to
maintain social distancing
and protect us from the
virus, we all searched for
other means to recreate.
Many of us have found
refuge in our green spaces
and parks. Although some
sections such as children’s
play areas and sports
facilities were restricted, the
possibility of enjoying them
was maintained as long as
social distancing guidelines
were respected.
Personally, I will forever
remember the iconic chalk
drawing that appeared on
sidewalks around the entire
city, including parks.
These drawings
became a symbol of
our times living with the
coronavirus when we had
to stay at home and our
children found healthy
activities. Drawing with
chalk doesn’t require WIFI
or anything other than
creativity. These small
demonstrations of art
reminded us of our ability
to stay cheerful. I see parks
the same way. Visiting a
park in these times brought
to many so much joy and
maintained our physical
and mental health.
The community in
New Orleans is fortunate
enough to enjoy one of the
oldest urban parks in the
country. With more than
1,300 hectares, City Park
offers a unique experience
to millions of visitors each
year. From the Botanical
Garden, paths for running
cyclists and athletes, to
amusement parks, this
amenity offers something
for everyone. My favorite
feature of the park is that
it hosts one of the oldest
families of oak trees. This
includes an oak tree that is
more than 800 years old.
Although this fact alone
qualifies the park as a real
treasure, there are many
more reasons why we must
appreciate and care for our
beloved urban park.
For now, what many of
us are appreciating is that
green areas are a place
where the community
gathers to interact,
recreate, and conduct
some physical activity.
This became even more
valuable when access to
many establishments was
restricted by COVID-19.
Through recreation and
interaction with nature,
people of all ages have the
opportunity to engage with
civic life. Moving forward,
we should make every
effort to maintain these
places that give so much
to our minds, bodies, and
spirit.

El nuevo COVID-19 afectó la
forma en la que interactuamos
en nuestra vida urbana. Lugares
como teatros, centros de concierto,
restaurantes y cafés, entre
otros, cerraron para mantener
el distanciamiento social y para
protegernos del virus. En este
contexto, muchos encontramos
refugio en nuestros espacios
verdes y parques. Aunque algunas
secciones como las áreas de juego
para niños e instalaciones de
deportes fueron restringidas, en los
parques se mantuvo la posibilidad
de disfrutarlos siempre y cuando
se respetaran los lineamientos del
distanciamiento social.
Personalmente, recordaré por
siempre los icónicos dibujos en
tiza que estuvieron apareciendo
en andenes alrededor de toda la
ciudad, incluidos nuestros parques.
Se convirtieron en un símbolo
de nuestros tiempos viviendo
con coronavirus, en donde nos
tuvimos que quedar en casa y los
niños buscaron cómo mantener
actividades sanas. El dibujar con

ni nada más que la creatividad y
el buen ánimo. Estas pequeñas

Latinos in the
movies in 2020

“In the Heights” was going to be the biggest Latino film of 2020. Directed by “Crazy Rich Asians” director
Jon Chu, the film featured an almost all-Latino cast in a story written by Latinos about Latinos. However,
due to the spread of COVID-19, “In the Heights” will no longer be coming out this year.
Now moving to June 2021, 2020 has been left without one of the biggest films for Latino representation
in years. Though nowhere near the same level as “In the Heights,” there are numerous films that do
feature Latinos in prominent roles throughout the rest of this year. Here are some of the most prominent
of these films. (Releases may move as the COVID-19 pandemic continues.)
Hamilton - July 3, 2020
Releasing in time for the celebration of the
United States’ independence, “Hamilton” moves
from its home on broadway to the comfort of
your homes via Disney+.
The film follows Alexander Hamilton, played
by Lin-Manuel Miranda, as he fights for
independence against the British to eventually

become one of the founding fathers of the
United States. Instead of an adaptation of
the musical, the film instead chooses to use
recordings of previous performances.
One of the things that “Hamilton” is known
for is their non-traditional casting, which has
given the ability for Latino actors to participate
in roles they previously wouldn’t have had the
opportunity to play before. As previously stated,
the film has Puerto Rican-American playwright
and actor Miranda in the titular role. The
film also stars Puerto Rican-American actor
Anthony Ramos in dual roles as John Laurens
and Phillip Hamilton.
Hamilton - Julio 3
Lanzándose a tiempo para la celebración de la
independencia de los Estados Unidos, “Hamilton” se
muda de su hogar en Broadway a la comodidad de
sus hogares a través de Disney+.
La película sigue a Alexander Hamilton, interpretado
por Lin-Manuel Miranda, mientras lucha por la

Inmate #1: The Rise of Danny
Trejo - July 7, 2020
We all know Danny Trejo from his appearances
in “Spy Kids,” “From Dusk till Dawn” and
“Machete.” But, in this new documentary,
viewers will get to know more about Danny
Trejo and how he got to be where he is.
Directed by Candian documentarian Brett
Harvey, “Inmate #1” tells the story of how
Danny Trejo went from being in prison to be an
extra in Hollywood. The film goes onto show
how Trejo became an icon and changed what it
meant to be a Latino in cinema.
Along with Trejo himself, the documentary will
also feature prominent Latino celebrities such
as director Robert Rodriguez, “Fast & Furious”
actress Michelle Rodriguez and “Up in Smoke”
actor Cheech Maron.

The Tax Collector - August 7, 2020
Helmed by “Suicide Squad” and “Bright”
director David Ayer, “The Tax Collector” looks
to take viewers on a gritty thriller following two
“tax collectors” in Los Angeles.
David, played by “A Better Life” actor Bobby
Soto, and Creeper, played by Shia LaBeouf,
are “tax collectors” for a crime lord known as
Wizard. However, with the return of Wizard’s
rival, the pair’s jobs and lives are in jeopardy
causing them to need to find a way to protect
their families.
Being set in Los Angeles, it is to be expected
to have a Latino cast and “The Tax Collector”
doesn’t disappoint. From “Once Upon a Time”
actress Lana Parilla and “Predator” actress
Elpidia Carrillo to comedian George Lopez
and MMA fighter Brian Ortega, the amount of
representation in this film is off the charts.
El Cobrador de Impuestos - Agosto 7
Liderada por el director David Ayer de “Suicide
Squad” y “Bright”, “The Tax Collector” mantener a

The One and Only Ivan - August
21, 2020
Adapting the award-winning children’s book,
“The One and Only Ivan” looks to provide a new
heartwarming tale for the current generation.
Ivan, voiced by Sam Rockwell, is a gorilla who
lives in a cage on top of a mall with an elephant,
voiced by Stella, and a dog, voiced by Danny
DeVito, but has no memory of how he got
there. After the animals take in a young, abused
elephant, they decide that things need to
change for them.
With a film mostly starring animals, much of
the human cast is made up by Latinos. Puerto
Rican-American actor Ramon Rodriguez plays
George, a custodian at the mall where Ivan and
his friends live. Starring alongside Rodriguez,
Puerto Rican-American actress Arianna
Greenblatt will play Julia, George’s daughter
who befriends the animals.
El inigualable Iván - Agosto 21
La adaptación del galardonado libro infantil, “The
One and Only Ivan” busca proporcionar una nueva

The New Mutants - August 28,
2020
After years of setbacks and reshoots, “The New
Mutants” will conclude the “X-Men” franchise
with a horror twist before being added into the
Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A group of five young mutants from all over the
world have been placed into a secret facility and
are looked after by fellow mutant Cecilia Reyes,
played by Alice Braga. However, the mutants
discover that the facility isn’t exactly what is
seems to be and plan to escape.
Special from many of the other superhero
movies out there, half of the cast of this
film is Latino. Brazilian Alice Braga plays the
mutant’s mentor in the facility, who may be
hiding something from them. Joining his fellow
Brazilian, actor Henry Zaga plays the Brazilian
mutant Roberto da Costa, who has the ability
to control solar energy. Playing a non-Latino
role, British-Argentine actress Anya Taylor-Joy
plays Russian mutant Illyana Rasputin, who can
teleport and wields a magic sword.
Los Nuevos Mutantes - Agosto 28
Después de años de contratiempos y regrabaciones,
“The New Mutants” concluirá la franquicia “X-Men”

Operating as Wonder Woman during the Cold

Taking a departure from his usual heroic roles

American Pedro Pascal takes the role of media
mogul Maxwell Lord. Lord is a constant foe of
the Justice League in the comic books, having

The French Dispatch - October 16,
2020
Bringing his unique and eccentric style back to
cinema, Wes Anderson returns with yet another
quirky film in “The French Dispatch.”
Working for the French bureau of a Kansas
newspaper, a group of American journalists
cover a variety of events from the kidnapping of
a police officer’s son, a student-led revolution
and the work of an incarcerated man. Despite
the film being set in France, this doesn’t mean
that there is no Latino representation to be
had. Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro plays
Moses Rosenthaler, an artist serving a term in
prison. Also appearing in the film is Guatemalan-
American actor Tony Revolori in an undisclosed
role once again working with Anderson after
starring in “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

Returning to the big screen almost 60 years
after its’ first adaptation, “West Side Story”
takes another look at these iconic star-crossed
lovers.
In 1950s New York, Tony, played by Ansel Elgort,
and Maria, played by Rachel Zegler, fall in love
with each other. However, the two are torn due
to their allegiances to rival street gangs, with
Tony belonging to the mostly white Jets and
Maria belonging to the mostly Puerto Rican
Sharks.
Differing from its’ 1961 original, this version of
“West Side Story” features more Latinos cast
in the roles of the Sharks. Maria is played by
Colombian American newcomer Rachel Zegler.
Cuban-Candian performer David Alvarez will
play the role of Bernardo, the leader of the
Sharks. Afro-Latina Ariana DeBose will play
Anita, the girlfriend of Bernardo.

As you can see, just because “In the Heights” won’t be
coming out this year doesn’t mean there will be no Latino

surely, Latinos are working their way into bigger and better
roles in film.

We Miss You
New Orleans is recognized around the world for its vibrant art
scene and its iconic LIVE music performances around town. The
impact of the pandemic in the city’s cultural economy has been
devastating. Even after over four months, walking on Frenchmen
Street and seeing boarded up music venues is a very somber
scene. We can only think of the many performers and venue
business owners who are being impacted the most. For most of
us, the spectators, New Orleans without its live music scene is
just not the same city. We can’t wait for music to return to every
corner.

THE WHITNEY
PLANTATION

Last Summer, I took out-oftown
visitors to the Whitney
Plantation Museum when I
heard it was the only museum
in Louisiana with an exclusive
focus on the lives of enslaved
people. Most of the tour took
place around the grounds
of the plantation complex,
which has over twelve historic
structures. It was a very hot
day and I was in agony. My
distress was null in contrast
to the pain that I could hear
within the stories of life in
the sugar plantation and the
difficult conditions endured
by enslaved people. Hearing
their names, seeing them
engraved on the memorial
walls, and even finding
their relation to known local
descendants put everything
in perspective and made it
feel too real and present.
Perhaps one of the hardest
thoughts was when I heard
that when slavery “officially”
ended, many workers decided
to stay at these plantations
because there were no other
worthwhile alternatives for
them.
Recently, our world has been
protesting and questioning
more than ever the systemic
racism that continues to
hurt the quality of life of
Black Americans and other
people of color. It is important
to educate ourselves and
understand the past, and how
it has shaped our current
society.
When you visit the Whitney
Plantation in Wallace,
Louisiana and take one of their
accurate historical tours that
talk about the culture, life, and
operations of New Orleans
plantations and the history
behind the Atlantic Slave
Trade, your eyes will be open
to seeing that slavery is not
such a distant entity. A tour is
not enough, but it can be the
beginning of an educational
journey so that we can all
understand better and become
advocates for a fair society for
Black Americans and others
who face injustices.

The Wall of Honor is a memorial dedicated
to all the people who were enslaved on the
Whitney Plantation. The names and the
information related to them (origin, age,
skills) were retrieved from original archives
and engraved on granite slabs.
So far, more than 350 slaves were identified
on official records.

Tuna Antipasto
Antipasto is the traditional first course of formal Italian
meals that include cured meats, olives, mushrooms,
pickled vegetables with vinegar and oil, and cheeses.
We have a recipe that may not be traditionally Italian,
but it will become a must have in any gatherings. This
Antipasto Dip replaces cured meats with tuna, making
lighter and more affordable. It’s easy to make and it
will make you the most liked host or the favorite guest
at your next gathering.
Ingredients:
10-12 servings. 82 calories per serving.
1 large white onion cut into thin slices
1 red bell pepper cut into long thin strips
1 tablespoon of oil
1 jar of tuna steaks (with the oil it comes in)
1 tablespoon of salt
1 jar of pickles, chopped (with the vinegar it
comes in)
1/2 jar of capers (with the vinegar it comes in)
1/2 cup of mushrooms previously fried in butter
1/2 jar of stuffed olives (with the vinegar it
comes in)
I / 2 jar of tomato sauce or ketchup
1 bay leaf
1/4 bottle of onions with vinegar
Prep: About 1 hour.
In a frying pan on the fire, heat the oil and fry the onion, paprika and bay leaf there for 3 minutes. Remove from the fire.
Separately, in a non-metal container, place the tuna and mash it with a fork, add the pickles, capers, olives, mushrooms,
onions, and tomato sauce. Stir well and pour this mixture over the previously fried onion and paprika. Place this mixture
on medium heat and let it heat until it boils, stirring gently with the help of a wooden spoon. Remove from the heat and
leave to cool.
Serve it accompanied by crackers.
NOTE: If you have time you can prepare it 1 day in advance so that it has better taste and store it in the fridge.

Although most people
are familiar with Napa and
Sonoma when it comes to
domestic wine, there are
some *246 legally defined
wine-producing regions
in the United States,
known as AVAs (American
Viticultural Areas),
throughout 33 states. This
is quite a bit of domestic
winemaking! However,
not many of them are
known as destinations for
wine tourism.
After months of
different degrees of
quarantine, our family
took a trip to Elijay,
Georgia. Being the
wine enthusiast, I am,
I naturally researched
wineries and vineyards
in the area, and to my
surprise, this town located
some two hours north
of Atlanta had plenty!
Most were not only
beautiful venues but also
offered a family-friendly
environment which
allowed me to taste new
wines while the little ones
rolled down the hills. I
wouldn’t say the wines
were life-changing, but
that does not mean they
were not interesting,
especially because they
were grown and produced
in a place that is not
known for viticulture.
Grapevines are not the
easiest crop to grow, and
in fact, quality grapes are
only produced in zones
located (roughly) between
the 30 and 50 degrees of
latitude, both north, and
south. While most of the
United States is located
within those parameters,
high humidity, extremely
hot temperatures, and
freezing winters rule
out a great part of the
territory. All that being
said, grapes also manage
to sneak their way into
borderline regions, where
certain varieties and even
different species of vines
(we will get to that in
a moment) manage to
survive and even thrive.
If you take a walk down
the French Quarter or
even Uptown -as some
acquaintances report-,
you may find a vine here
and there growing amok
on walls and iron gates.
Most wine produced
worldwide utilizes the
Vitis vinifera species,
which is of European
origin, but native North
American species like
Vitis labrusca (mostly for
table grapes and grape
juice production) and
Vitis rotundifolia (used
to produce wine) grow
around the country.
While in Georgia, I was
able to taste for the firsttime
wines made from
native grape varieties like
Muscadine, and hybrids
(the offspring of two
different species) like
Seyval Blanc. In general,
wines made from these
grapes are a little rougher
on the palate, but many
wineries have evolved
and become able to
create more refined wines
from native varieties and
hybrids.
So, if you ever want
to plan a family-friendly
trip to wine country, look
for those areas that may
not be as known and will
offer both great value and
something different to
taste.

Aunque la mayoría de las personas conocen de
la existencia de Napa y Sonoma en lo que se
refiere a vino nacional, por el momento, hay
alrededor de 246 regiones productoras de vino
legalmente establecidas en los Estados Unidos.
A estas regiones se les conoce como AVAs
(American Viticultural Areas), y se encuentran
en 33 estados. ¡Esto representa una cantidad
importante de vino nacional! Sin embargo, no
muchas de ellas se conocen como un destino
turístico relacionado al vino.
Después de varios meses en cuarentena en
diferentes modalidades, nuestra familia viajó a
Elijay, Georgia. Como la amante de vino que soy,
naturalmente investigué sobre bodegas de vino
y viñedos en el área, y para mi asombro, ¡este
lugar a unas dos horas al norte de Atlanta tenía
muchas! La mayoría de los viñedos no solo son
lugares hermosos, sino que también ofrecen
un ambiente para toda la familia. Gracias a esto
pude catar nuevos vinos mientras los niños se
divertían rodando colina abajo. No diría que los

estuvimos en Georgia, pude catar por primera
vez vinos hechos de variedades nativas como

sentires. Y esta época no va a ser la excepción. El mundo
estaba acostumbrado a moverse tan rápido que no pasaba
a mirar por la ventana, a escuchar una canción, a leer un
poema; estaba acostumbrado a producir. Ahora no hay
de otra que hacer todas esas cosas para las que antes no
había tiempo. Amanda Shaw sabe que nuestra vida en estos

As we start to reopen the economy
while still dealing with high positivity
of COVID-19, a new way of tracing
contacts is becoming widely available.
This tracing is driven by technology
and it is not the official contact tracing
managed by the Health Departments
and the CDC. This is a public-driven,
opt-in technology, which means user
interaction is required. Users must
download the app and register, and
users must agree and consent to be
traced.
How does it work?
Currently, there are two ways in
which this tracing technology works.
One is via Bluetooth. The users with
the app need to be within 20 feet of
each other, for at least five minutes
for notifications to appear. The other
is via location services. The app
uses the smartphone’s GPS and the
surrounding cellular towers.
iOS and Android devices have added
recently a new option that must
be enabled beyond the download
of the tracing app and the optingin.
This security feature has been
implemented to ensure that users
are aware that this new technology is
being used for tracking, so the extra
step must be enabled for the app to
properly work.
Using the location services for
tracing allows users to look up the
location prior to the visit and see
if there are people that have been
infected with Covid-19 at that site.
The disadvantage of using location
services is that there is no privacy,
and users are being tracked by an
unknown source.
When using the Bluetooth tracing
option, users have more privacy,
since they do not share their location
with the app. The downside of this is
that users must be at that particular
location and it could take up to five
minutes for notifications to appear
that will signal that there are infected
people at the location, which can be
too long of an exposure.
In European and Asian countries
many people are voluntarily using
massive COVID-19 contact tracing
technology. It is likely that Americans
would be reluctant to share their
location and information voluntarily,
as there are privacy concerns. Official
government contact tracers find
reluctance from people to share
information when they contact them
to communicate they could have been
exposed to COVID-19.
