I sped up, mysleeve caught on the doorknob, and Idid an immediate 90 degree turn andhead crash into a bank of cupboards.I dropped the clothesbasket, jumpedover it and grabbed the phone. Onyxhad been sitting in the kitchen watchingme, and with the crash looked instantlysympathetic, then just as quickly turnedher head. Standing proud by themain road, he makes you think ofbacon, sausage and ham. But I quicklylearned upon entering this darling littleshop, that The Best Little Pork Shoppecarries hundreds of non-pork productsas well.What’s better than the smell offreshly baked cinnamon rolls? I know…bacon…BUT this was the smell insidethe Shoppe on the Saturday morning Idecided I needed to meet Percy. 10-yearemployee Rhonda had just pulled somehot cinnamon brioche buns out of theoven at the in-store bakery. The aromaticatmosphere was pure comfort in thecozy shop.I was so thrilled to see such a varietyof pork products: from london broil tobacon burgers, there was so much morethan just bacon. I noted the sign on thedoor that said, “Thank you for supportinglocal independent business.”Not only did I have great choicein pork, but the selection of locallymade products was also surprisinglyimpressive. Don’t like pork? The Shoppealso offers free-range, drug-free chicken.Rhonda told me that there are some localStory and photos by Elaine Ballantyne, Brightproducts they havecarried and sold forover 20 years.I like to give foodgifts to hard-tobuy-formen in mylife, specifically myfather-in-law. Alllocally made, theShoppe had choicesfrom jams, oils, saladdressings, rubs and countless pickledproducts. The artisan nettle cheese byMountain Oak of New Hamburg caughtmy eye. I bought some and don’t let thename “nettle” scare you—it is simply asuperb tasting cheese!Going strong since 1918, I also boughta jar of Nith Valley Apiaries cinnamonhoney (have you figured out that I lovecinnamon?). My father-in-law tells methat this honey spread on your morningtoast is wonderful. And since my fatherin-lawloves pickled eggs, I picked up a jarmade from Stemmler’s of St. Clements.A dear friend had just lost her belovedcat to cancer, so I checked out thecheerful gift area in search of somethingto make her smile. I looked at beautifulnotebooks, kitchen tools, garden flags,tea towels and napkins until I found theperfect thing. A tea drinker, I found thecutest cat mug for my bereaved friendthat said “I love you” at the bottom of thecup (I know her cat would have said thatif he could talk).
