Theirrestaurant patio is open as of this printingon July 9th, but it speaks volumes aboutwhat many businesses were fearing at theheight of the quarantine in Ontario. I thinkmost of you understand the importance ofshopping local, and I thank you on behalfof all my customers, but please relax for amoment to read this inspiring letter.First of all I want to recognize theseverity of COVID-19, the sacrifice of allthe frontline workers and the tragedy ofeach and every life lost to this terriblesituation. It is impossible to forget ona daily basis what we face as we areconstantly presented with COVID-19news, updates, protocols and warnings.I want to let you in on the thoughts thatoccupy my mind on a daily basis. On March 17th when we were giventhe order to close our restaurant andgift shop, we were not concerned aboutthe viability of our business and quicklyclosed down to help flatten the curve. Weinitiated some needed maintenance inanticipation of reopening in 14 days, butthose initial 14 days now have gone onto more than 60 days. While we are stillin a viable position and look forward toreopening we realize that another longstretch of closure would be too much tobear. We are in a better position than a lotof restaurants. In an open letter yesterdayfrom Shanna Munro, President and CEOof Restaurants Canada, she states that1 out of 10 restaurants have alreadypermanently closed and that 1 out of 2independent restaurants does not expectto survive the COVID-19 shutdown.Independent restaurants are truly animportant part of our culture and willANNANDALENATIONAL HISTORIC SITEShow Them Your Support!By Brenda Smith, Pinecroft Gallery & Gift Shop, Aylmerbe a fixture of our day to day life thatwill certainly be missed if they fall to thewayside, as they represent the colour andculture and diversity of life in Canada. Our Green Frog Tearoom is animportant part of what Pinecroft isand is one part of our family business. It has sustained us through manydifficult financial times when we haveexperienced recessions and down turnsin our economy. Eating out has alwaysbeen a way to treat ourselves whentimes are bad. COVID-19 has changedeverything and now that is not the case. Our family has spent 72 years buildingour business, supporting our community, welcoming visitors from across thecountry and the world and showcasingwhat Elgin County has to offer. We arejust one of many businesses who haveand want to continue to do that. Please remember the independentswhen this is all over, please rememberto support all your local businesses, whatever they maybe, and rememberthat behind every doorfront are families whohave just hung on to bethere when given theword to open. Weneed more choicesthan the paved acresof the big box mallsthat look the samefrom Halifax toVancouver and even across the face ofNorth America. We need to see the facesand hearts of the communities that makeour country so fabulous.Every day we have a meeting to seewhere we stand and how we can moveforward. We deal with depression, anxietyand heart break and we question whethertoday is the day we decide to retire, butwe also realize that we are the incomesource for our four immediate familiesand giving up is not an option. We arenot alone. There are tens of thousands of...hometown independentswill be washed away in atsunami of indifferencefamilies like ours going through the samefinancial and emotional turmoil and Ihope that they can find peace of mindand hope in the future. We are in this together, but it isconsumers who will dictate what theoutcome will look like and what thefuture of small towns and independentbusinesses will looklike. If you like whatyou see when yougo to your town toshop, to have yourhair done, to go tothe gym, to engagein service businesses, and if you like thevariety and feel that your town gives you, then please consider returning to thesestores and businesses to shop as soonas they are allowed to open. Welcomethem back and don’t make them engagein a new battle alone against mountingdebt, the fight for market share and feargenerated by health concerns, whenthey have just finished waging a waragainst the COVID-19 shutdown.Show them your support with yourbuying power and your confidence in asafe financial future for all ofus by getting out and beatinga path to their store whetherit be only a virtual version atcurb side, online or brick andmortar. Our minds are a powerfultool that we have and veryoften what we think about, webring about. Let’s not focus onthe negativity in our lives. Let’snot give COVID-19 any moreenergy through our thoughts, but let us focus on our wellbeing, our health and a betterfuture for us all.SUMMER 2020 “A journey is like marriage.
