We eagerly anticipate theappearance of daffodil sprouts, and thefirst fat robin, and the longer, sunny days.But what I look forward towith all the longing of mywinter-weary heart is thefirst bright morning when Ican take my laundry basketout to the clothesline.My mother hung her washin all seasons. In the sixties, shestill used her wringer washer. Ican clearly recall her feeding thesopping pieces of wet clothingthrough the wringer while Iwatched my shirts and pantsand socks come out as flat aspieces of paper on the otherside. Even in winter, she took herbasket out to the line, and later, when shebrought the clothes in, each item was asstiff as a board. I remember the cold, crispsmell that filled the kitchen as she ironedevery piece of laundry, trying to thawit out and get it dry enough to put intothe drawers. Mom didn’t enjoy trudgingthrough the snow to the clothesline, butit was a joy to her in the warmer weather.She took great delight in tucking us inat night, under sheets that had spenta sunny spring afternoon snapping inthe wind out on the clothesline. Thesmell of the sheets was intoxicating; acouple of deep inhalations and we wereborne blithely off to dreamland. In theblack and white photographs of us kidsby Corrina Austin, St.Thomasfrom Daytripping July-Aug. 2003playing outside in the summer, the ladenclothesline is always in the background,towels and pants and shirts splayed outin the breeze like banners. When Momwasn’t watching, we loved to play andhide amongst the sheets, pretending theywere caravan tents, or the billowing sailsof tall ships.My clothesline waits for me now, outin the back yard. The empty linestremble in the chill wind, andthe crusted snow is piled uparound the centre pole. Whenthe first day of spring comes, I willlug out all the clothes that I washedthe night before, and as the sun rises,I will reach for my clothespins. Thereis something so peaceful aboutbeing alone at the clotheslinein the early morning, listeningto the birds and murmuring to theneighbourhood cats thatmeander into the yard for aquiet visit. Hanging clotheson the line is good therapy. AsI peg the towels together, and the socksin their pairs, it is really my own thoughtsI am arranging in flowing, ordered rows.Later on in the hectic day, when I am atwork, I will pause and think of my family’slaundry, trailing languidly on the wind,and I will look forward to coming homeand gathering it off the line, warm and dryand sweet-smelling.
