Keep reading for theirrecommendations.Chef Dan Megna, Twisted LemonRestaurant & Flavour Junkies, Cayuga“Our favourite Take & Bake menu itemhas to be Chicken & Waffles. It is fresh, vibrant, different, and fun. It’s a flavourblast especially now that we can bringflavours from the garden.”Tips for ordering takeout: “Thingsare different right now. Order whatrestaurants are offering. There arelimitations on what food restaurants caneven get right now. Respect protocol, everyone is doing the best they can tosurvive and still put out top quality, everything you would expect from yourfavourite restaurant. Be patient withrestaurants that don’t usually offer orspecialize in takeout, they are doing theirbest to adapt.”Recommendations for other takeoutoptions: “Carolinian Cafe and Cravingsby Brittany in Cayuga—for coffee & quicksnacks/sandwiches, and sweet treats!!Concession Road Brewery in Jarvis iswhere we get most of our beer, includingour fun collaboration beers we’ve donetogether.”Chef Benjamin Leblanc-Beaudoin,Iron Kettle Bed and Breakfast, Comber“Our favourite takeout item isMultigrain Sourdough—it’s my favouritething to make and eat! Unfortunately,I have to stop myself from eating it asmuch as I did at first.“When ordering takeout, it’simportant to consider when and whereyou are going to eat the food. The mainquestions are: Will it need reheating? Will it be at its peak of quality? It’s hardto imagine nachos, French fries andfried fish as being at their best whenreheated.”Recommendations for other takeoutoptions: “I have to say that Birdies Perchin Leamington is special. The quality ofMIONTARIO SHOPNYLOCAL4 Chefs Share Their Favourite Takeout Dishestheir food is true to their reputation, andyou can eat it right away in your car. Myfavourite dish of theirs is the fish taco, and of course their Birdies Sauce.”Chef Mark Graham, Clock TowerBistro, Strathroy“Our most popular takeout itemshave been our Thin Crust Pizza, BeefStroganoff and Beef Taco Mac andCheese. All three are great takeoutmeals that stay nice and hot while beingtransported.“The one thing I think people shouldavoid when ordering takeout is Frenchfries. They go cold fast and get soggy. Ialways recommend that people order inadvance if they can. We can get a littlebogged down with takeout sometimes. With advance orders we can space outthe pickup times and control the flow ofpeople.”Recommendations for other takeoutoptions: “Simply House in Strathroyfor Chinese food. The food is alwaysgreat quality, consistent and he isan independent operator, not a bigmultinational chain which I like tosupport.”Chef Dean Litster, Armandos,Amherstburg“We started making our own 18-hourapplewood smoked pulled pork tossedin Armando’s own barbeque sauce. Wefeature it on a pizza called the “SimcoeSmokehouse” (named after a street inAmherstburg) as well as a pulled porksandwich. It is the perfect blend of flavourswith the smoky, sweet, and just a little bitof heat—and the pickles add that satisfyingcrunch. Both these items are great reheatedand travel well—making them perfectfor takeout or a nice picnic. (Note: Onlyavailable at Armando’s Amherstburg).“Our best tip for ordering takeout is tocheck the restaurant’s website or socialmedia to see if they have made any changesto their menu or hours. Current events haveforced restaurants to make many changesquickly and checking online can mean youget the most accurate information. Someareas are experiencing food shortages ofcertain food items which is forcing chefs toget creative. This means there could evenbe cool new menu items to check out.”Recommendations for other takeoutoptions: “Both Grand Cantina in FordCity (Windsor) as well as El Diablo inKingsville are absolute gems in the area. Both offer amazing tacos and small platesusing fresh ingredients and feature someunique flavour combinations. I’d highlyrecommend checking out either (or both!).”Page 50“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” — St. AugustineSUMMER 2020
