Decluttering.Purging. Downsizing. But the term I likebest is letting go.Apparently we spend the first half ofour life accumulating things and the lasthalf trying to get rid of them! Anotherestimate sets the time spent amassingstuff at two thirds of our life with onlyone third spent purging.Discovering a simpler lifestylehad me seeing my house full of stuffin a different light. By the time thisconsciousness arrived, I had beensaving for about 40 years. I hope I fallunder the first estimate, otherwise, withthe second, my end is near!My first step towards less was payingattention to what I was bringing in thedoor and why. I also vowed to use up,wear out or get rid of what I already had.A few years later, my letting go wasfast tracked when I decided to sell myhouse. Downsizing, discarding anddecluttering became necessary. Oncethe process was finished, I liked theresult so much I wondered why I wasmoving!Four years after my move, letting gowas pushed into overdrive. I was aboutto share my home with someone elseso needed to make room for a secondperson’s stuff. A lot of discarding,recycling, donating and selling wenton as items from two households weremerged.I have to admit that over the years, Ihave fallen off the wagon from time totime as my stuff seems to be going, orgrowing, in the wrong direction! To keepon top of my stuff, I have developed afew strategies.Downsizing is revisited throughoutthe year with peak times being afterthe New Year arrives and pairing theprocess with spring cleaning.I have come to realize that I am notalways ready to let go. Is this item worthsomething? Will I need it later? Will Iregret getting rid of it? However, my mind seemsto work on the problem subconsciouslyas when I return to my decluttering, Iam amazed at the stuff I can let go.Even fifteen minutes here and there,working on a few things or a small areaof concern, can add up and make mefeel better.Sometimes years pass before Iam ready to let go of an item. I try torecall that, over time, some things candisintegrate, deteriorate or are no longerneeded, or wanted, by anyone. If I wait,will it be too late?Another more morbid thought isthat I don’t want any of my loved onesto have to sift through mounds of myaccumulated stuff should I pass away!Other events such as housemaintenance and repairs can have asilver lining. As things are removed tomake room for the work to be done, theyare revisited and donated, sometimes incar loads!Calls from charities for donations arewelcomed and accepted. A promise toput some things out on the porch forpick up spurs me into action.I keep trying to remind myself of myoriginal vow to scrutinize what I ambringing in. If I do bring an item in, thenone item has to go out.Although letting go can be hard, theend result not only lightens one’s abode,but one’s mood!
