PRODUCTION

AND HEALTH

Strengthening livestock’s

contribution to the

Sustainable Development

Goals (SDGs) will require a

profound transformation of

the sector, as demonstrated in

the most recent report in the

World Livestock series (p. 53).

The report looks at the multiple

roles that livestock can play

in achieving the SDGs and

the challenges of maximizing

benefits while reducing risks,

taking into account animal,

human and environmental health,

wild and agro-biodiversity,

income generation, feed safety

and disease prevention.

A major challenge posed by

the growth of the sector is the

increasing use of antimicrobials,

and the consequent increase

in antimicrobial resistance

(AMR) and risks associated

with animal diseases. FAO

is therefore producing timely

analysis and guidance to

minimize antimicrobial use and

to improve awareness of AMR

at the policy level (p. 53).

High impact emerging and

transboundary animal diseases,

a constant threat to livelihoods and

food security, are also a key focus

of FAO’s research and action. The

Emergency Prevention System

(EMPRES) against transboundary

animal and plant pests and

diseases celebrates its 25th

Anniversary in 2019. Global

programmes on foot-and-mouth

disease and Peste des Petits

Ruminants (p. 57) are operational

and a high priority in 2018–2019

in the light of the continued spread

of African swine fever (p. 54) in

Asia and Europe. •
