FISHERIES AND
AQUACULTURE
Fisheries and aquaculture
provide food and income to
around 820 million people in
the world and are central to FAO's
mission of eradicating hunger by
2030. FAO's fisheries publications
are a global reference in their
field and cover a range of
themes. Climate change is a
major concern, and FAO studies
show that climate variability will
significantly affect availability and
trade of fish products (p. 77).
Small-scale fisheries are a key
contributor to poverty alleviation
and food security, providing
two thirds of catches destined
for human consumption and
accounting for 90 percent
of employment in the sector.
FAO publishes good practices
and guidance to ensure that
these fisheries are sustainable
and benefit fishers and their
communities (p. 88).
However, illegal, unreported
and unregulated fishing (IUU)
threatens fisheries' sustainability.
Several publications support
implementation of the Port State
Measures Agreement, which is
crucial for curbing IUU fishing
(pp. 85−88). Good progress was
reported at the Second Meeting of
the Parties in June 2019.
Coming up are an International
Symposium on Fisheries
Sustainability in November
2019, and the 25th anniversary
of the Code of Conduct for
Responsible Fisheries in 2020.
In June 2020, Portugal will host
the 2nd United Nations Oceans
Summit, highlighting issues
related to oceans, fisheries and
coastal communities, and looking
at progress towards SDG 14. •
