23−25 July 2018Dakar, SenegalFAO FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE PROCEEDINGSFollowing the endorsement of the Voluntary Guidelines for SecuringSustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security andPoverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) by the FAO Committee on Fisheries(COFI) in June 2014, and in line with Paragraph 13.6 of the SSFGuidelines promoting the development of regional plans of action fortheir implementation, a regional consultation was held to discuss theimplementation of the SSF Guidelines in West and Central Africa inDakar, Senegal on 23–25 July 2018.The objective of the consultation was to raise awareness of theimportant role of the small-scale fisheries sector and how this isaddressed in the African Union’s Policy Framework and Reform Strategyfor Fisheries and Aquaculture in Africa (PFRS), the ECOWAS regionalfisheries and aquaculture policy (under development with support fromthe FIRST programme), and the SSF Guidelines. It also provided anopportunity to share experiences and identify actions needed tosupport and promote small-scale fisheries in the CECAF region.During the three-day consultation, participants examined the currentstatus of small-scale fisheries in the region, shared experiences throughtopical presentations, and discussed priorities and actions forimplementing the SSF Guidelines at regional and national levels, insupport of existing regional frameworks.
