High maintenance
Every airplane undergoes a Maintenance Service
Check every 15 days. It’s usually done during
the night to ensure that the plane is ready
for takeoff early the next morning. This Boeing
737-600 Sindre Viking is undergoing a C
check – a medium-scale checkup occurs every
three years – during which technicians go over
the fuselage, look for corrosion and check the
directional control system. The C4 inspection is
the most thorough and happens every 12 years.
The plane is dismantled down to the smallest
component. Only the exterior remains in place.
Everything is checked (or double-checked, if
it is a critical component) before the plane is
put back together again. With many airplanes
having around 367,000 individual parts,
there’s plenty of work to be done.
