8. The hot cocoa
Café Munding, Tirol’s oldest café, is
full of charming reminders of the past.
Founded in 1803, the interior recalls
its early days as purveyor to Archduke
Eugen of Austria and Prince Ludwig
of Saxe-Coburg-Koháry, but there
are also details dating from the 1940s
and a spluttering Faema E61 espresso
machine. Munding has roasted its own
coffee for more than a century, but its
signature drink is the hot chocolate
served on a silver tray: a highball glass of
warm milk with Valrhona chocolate and
a bowl of whipped cream on the side.
9. The change of scenery
Just 15 minutes from Innsbruck, Igls
has been a full-fledged spa resort since
1902, with Emperor Franz Josef and
the Russian aristocracy summering
here. But this Alpine village has
plenty going for it in winter, too. The
classic Sporthotel Igls has Mount
Patscherkofel, the Olympic bobsled
track and memories of two Winter
Shopping in the Markthalle (left) and a
chocolate treat at Café Munding (below)
