PERFECT INNSBRUCK
The relaxed interior
of Restaurant Sitzwohl
1. The restaurant
Amid the palatial banks of the city
center, an old school-turned-restaurant
offers a master class in Tirolean cuisine.
Sitzwohl’s owners, Elisabeth Geisler and
Irmgard Sitzwohl, also bring into play
Mediterranean influences, as can be
seen from their Oktopusgröstl – classic
Tiroler gröstl (pork-and-potato hash)
topped with octopus. Geisler calls their
style of cooking a marriage of simplicity
and good produce. The adjoining
Geislerei deli sells Sitzwohl’s own
chutneys, jams and soups.
2. Architectural highs
Innsbruck’s take on the subway is a
cable car. The ultramodern Hungerburg
funicular climbs from the old town via
the Alpine Zoo to Mount Hungerburg
through futuristic glass stations
designed by Zaha Hadid, the architect
behind the recently revamped Bergisel
Ski Jump. Originally built in 1928, the
90-meter landmark immortalized in
the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics was
crowned with a viewing platform and
panoramic café when it was remodeled
10 years ago. $7 round-trip.
