Established <strong>in</strong> 1988 by <strong>the</strong> World Meteorological Org<strong>an</strong>ization <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />

UN Environment Programme, <strong>the</strong> IPCC surveys world-wide scientific<br />

<strong>an</strong>d technical literature <strong>an</strong>d publishes assessment reports that are<br />

widely recognized as <strong>the</strong> most credible exist<strong>in</strong>g sources <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

on climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>. The IPCC also works on methodologies <strong>an</strong>d<br />

responds to specific requests from <strong>the</strong> subsidiary bodies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United<br />

Nations Framework Convention on <strong>Climate</strong> Ch<strong>an</strong>ge (UNFCCC – see<br />

below) The IPCC is <strong>in</strong>dependent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Convention.<br />

An <strong>in</strong>ternational agreement that is l<strong>in</strong>ked to <strong>the</strong> United Nations<br />

Framework Convention on <strong>Climate</strong> Ch<strong>an</strong>ge (UNFCCC). Its major<br />

feature is that it sets b<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g targets for 37 <strong>in</strong>dustrialized countries <strong>an</strong>d<br />

<strong>the</strong> Europe<strong>an</strong> community for reduc<strong>in</strong>g greenhouse gas (GHG)<br />

emissions. These amount to <strong>an</strong> average <strong>of</strong> five per cent aga<strong>in</strong>st 1990<br />

levels over <strong>the</strong> five-year period 2008-2012.<br />

Interventions to reduce <strong>the</strong> sources or enh<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>of</strong><br />

All pl<strong>an</strong>ts <strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>imals that naturally occur, ei<strong>the</strong>r presently or<br />

historically, <strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong> ecosystem.<br />

The process a pl<strong>an</strong>t uses to comb<strong>in</strong>e sunlight, water, <strong>an</strong>d carbon<br />

dioxide to produce oxygen <strong>an</strong>d energy (sugar).<br />

The removal <strong>an</strong>d storage <strong>of</strong> carbon from <strong>the</strong> atmosphere <strong>in</strong> carbon<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ks (such as oce<strong>an</strong>s, forests or soils) through physical or biological<br />

processes, such as photosyn<strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

The Convention on <strong>Climate</strong> Ch<strong>an</strong>ge sets <strong>an</strong> overall framework for<br />

<strong>in</strong>tergovernmental efforts to tackle <strong>the</strong> global challenge posed by<br />

climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>. It recognises that <strong>the</strong> climate system is a shared<br />

resource whose stability c<strong>an</strong> be affected by <strong>in</strong>dustrial <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

emissions <strong>of</strong> carbon dioxide <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r greenhouse gases. The<br />

Convention enjoys near universal membership, hav<strong>in</strong>g been ratified by<br />

192 countries.<br />

A pl<strong>an</strong>t or <strong>an</strong>imal is vulnerable when it is considered to be fac<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

high risk <strong>of</strong> ext<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> wild.<br />

Short-term atmospheric conditions. Wea<strong>the</strong>r is measured by<br />

temperature, humidity, w<strong>in</strong>d speed, atmospheric pressure, cloud<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

<strong>an</strong>d precipitation.<br />
