• Warmer <strong>an</strong>d drier conditions are partially<br />

responsible for reduced forest productivity<br />

<strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>creased forest fires <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong> Bas<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Projections<br />

• The long-term prospect is for cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

warm<strong>in</strong>g as <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> greenhouse<br />

gases <strong>in</strong>creases over time. A<br />

2005 study by WWF found that a global<br />

temperature <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>of</strong> 2°C is likely to<br />

lead to a correspond<strong>in</strong>g warm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> 1°C<br />

to 3°C <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong>. Temperatures<br />

are likely to be higher <strong>in</strong>l<strong>an</strong>d th<strong>an</strong><br />

along <strong>the</strong> coast <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> largest <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

will take place dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> summer<br />

(Gi<strong>an</strong>nakopolous et al., 2005).<br />

• Precipitation trends are uncerta<strong>in</strong>, but<br />

some models suggest <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>of</strong><br />

up to 10 per cent <strong>in</strong> w<strong>in</strong>ter precipitation<br />

<strong>an</strong>d a decrease <strong>of</strong> 5 to 15 per cent <strong>in</strong><br />

summer precipitation by <strong>the</strong> latter half<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 21st century (Karas, 2000).<br />

• As climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>s <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region, <strong>the</strong><br />

frequency <strong>of</strong> extreme wea<strong>the</strong>r - heat<br />

waves <strong>an</strong>d droughts - will <strong>in</strong>crease.<br />

Droughts are likely to be longer.<br />

Implications <strong>an</strong>d possible future<br />

impacts<br />

• As early as 1990, <strong>the</strong> United Nations<br />

Environment Programme (UNEP)<br />

warned that <strong>the</strong> Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong> would<br />

be one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first regions to feel <strong>the</strong><br />

impact <strong>of</strong> climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> on water<br />

resources. Water is already scarce <strong>in</strong><br />

some parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> region <strong>an</strong>d a<br />

decrease <strong>in</strong> precipitation could make<br />

exist<strong>in</strong>g problems even worse. Water<br />

quality could also be affected. Higher<br />

temperatures <strong>an</strong>d evaporation would<br />

cause <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> sal<strong>in</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> lakes<br />

<strong>an</strong>d reservoirs. Sea level rise would<br />

<strong>in</strong>crease saltwater <strong>in</strong>trusion <strong>in</strong>to<br />

aquifers <strong>an</strong>d estuaries (Karas, 2000).<br />

• The areas that are prone to desertification<br />

are likely to <strong>in</strong>crease, as will <strong>the</strong><br />

severity <strong>of</strong> desertification <strong>in</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g dry<br />

l<strong>an</strong>ds (Karas, 2000).<br />

• There may be a reduction <strong>in</strong> production<br />

<strong>an</strong>d crop yields <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong> bas<strong>in</strong>. Desertification,<br />

<strong>in</strong>creased fire risk, spread <strong>of</strong> pests<br />

<strong>an</strong>d diseases <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> region, <strong>an</strong>d<br />

<strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>s <strong>in</strong> global markets could affect<br />

agriculture to vary<strong>in</strong>g degrees (Karas,<br />

2000).<br />

• Warmer temperatures <strong>in</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn<br />

Europe could encourage people <strong>the</strong>re<br />

to take domestic holidays, ra<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>an</strong><br />

travel to <strong>the</strong> Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong> (Gi<strong>an</strong>nakopolous<br />

et al., 2005). This would<br />

adversely affect <strong>the</strong> economy <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong>.<br />

Variations <strong>in</strong> precipitation due to climate<br />

<strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> are likely to accelerate erosion on <strong>the</strong><br />

eastern side <strong>of</strong> St. Helena. The Great Wood<br />

(shown here) was orig<strong>in</strong>ally populated by<br />

gumwood trees endemic to St Helena. The<br />

whole forest has been destroyed as timber<br />

was used for firewood <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> bark for<br />

t<strong>an</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g lea<strong>the</strong>r. Domesticated <strong>an</strong>imals<br />

roamed free graz<strong>in</strong>g on new growth. Low<br />

ra<strong>in</strong>fall <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> south-easterly w<strong>in</strong>ds are now<br />

<strong>in</strong>strumental <strong>in</strong> ch<strong>an</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> exposed<br />

woodl<strong>an</strong>d soil to parched low-grade s<strong>an</strong>d/clay<br />

with low levels <strong>of</strong> nutrient. Heavy ra<strong>in</strong>s c<strong>an</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>the</strong> erosion rate; drought reta<strong>in</strong>s <strong>the</strong><br />

conditions for fur<strong>the</strong>r w<strong>in</strong>d based erosion.<br />
