Corals killed by sea warm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> BIOT<br />

<strong>of</strong> climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> without <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong><br />

hum<strong>an</strong>-<strong>in</strong>duced environmental stresses,<br />

such as pollution <strong>an</strong>d l<strong>an</strong>d-use <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

coastal zone.<br />

Observed <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong><br />

• Ris<strong>in</strong>g sea temperatures have contributed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> coral reefs.<br />

There have been several coral<br />

bleach<strong>in</strong>g episodes follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> major<br />

bleach<strong>in</strong>g event <strong>in</strong> 1998, which<br />

destroyed some 80 per cent <strong>of</strong> live coral<br />

cover to a depth <strong>of</strong> 30 m after sea surface<br />

temperatures rose to almost 30°C<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chagos Archipelago. Bleach<strong>in</strong>g<br />

events have taken place as recently as<br />

2004.<br />

• Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>an</strong>ds are experienc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

coastal erosion caused by sea level rise<br />

<strong>an</strong>d possibly <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> s<strong>an</strong>d production<br />

follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mass mortality <strong>of</strong><br />

coral reefs. Some areas have been<br />

more badly affected th<strong>an</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

• Sea level rise <strong>in</strong> Diego Garcia has averaged<br />

0.54 cm per year s<strong>in</strong>ce 1986, but<br />

appears to be accelerat<strong>in</strong>g (Sheppard<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Spald<strong>in</strong>g, 2003).<br />

Implications <strong>an</strong>d possible future<br />

impacts<br />

• Loss <strong>of</strong> reefs is lead<strong>in</strong>g to loss <strong>of</strong> some<br />

fish <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r mar<strong>in</strong>e species. The biodiversity<br />

<strong>of</strong> reefs <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir biological<br />

<strong>in</strong>tegrity is be<strong>in</strong>g compromised.<br />

• Erosion is already caus<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>an</strong>d will cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

to cause, damage to <strong>the</strong> shorel<strong>in</strong>e<br />

<strong>an</strong>d to build<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>an</strong>d structures along<br />

<strong>the</strong> coast.<br />

• As <strong>the</strong> sea level rises, <strong>the</strong> reef flats (<strong>the</strong><br />

shallow, flattest part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reef that is<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten uncovered at low tide) at <strong>the</strong> me<strong>an</strong><br />

low tide level will become less effective<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> shorel<strong>in</strong>e protection from<br />

waves.<br />

3.2.5 Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong><br />

There are two <strong>UKOTs</strong> <strong>in</strong> this region:<br />

Gibraltar <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> Sovereign Base Areas <strong>of</strong><br />

Akrotiri <strong>an</strong>d Dhekelia <strong>in</strong> Cyprus.<br />

Observed <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong><br />

• El Niño events have been associated<br />

with low ra<strong>in</strong>fall <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> western <strong>an</strong>d central<br />

Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong>.<br />

• Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> larger river deltas <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

region have been affected by sea level<br />

rise.<br />

• There have been variations <strong>in</strong> sea surface<br />

temperatures over <strong>the</strong> last 120<br />

years, but no clear trend has emerged.<br />

However, deep-water records for <strong>the</strong><br />

western Mediterr<strong>an</strong>e<strong>an</strong> po<strong>in</strong>t to cont<strong>in</strong>uous<br />

warm<strong>in</strong>g from 1959 (Bethoux et al.,<br />

1997 cited <strong>in</strong> Karas, 2000).<br />

• L<strong>an</strong>d records show a warm<strong>in</strong>g trend for<br />

<strong>the</strong> western <strong>an</strong>d central part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

region <strong>an</strong>d a slight cool<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

eastern part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bas<strong>in</strong>.
