from activities on l<strong>an</strong>d – improper<br />
waste disposal <strong>an</strong>d run-<strong>of</strong>f from<br />
farm<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>dustry – affects <strong>the</strong><br />
health <strong>of</strong> coral reefs, as do activities <strong>in</strong><br />

div<strong>in</strong>g, snorkell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d swimm<strong>in</strong>g)<br />
activities do not contribute to damag<strong>in</strong>g<br />
reefs.<br />
� Avoid unsusta<strong>in</strong>able farm<strong>in</strong>g practices.<br />
The misuse <strong>an</strong>d over-use <strong>of</strong> pesticides<br />
<strong>an</strong>d fertilizers, over-cultivation on marg<strong>in</strong>al<br />
l<strong>an</strong>ds, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>appropriate farm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
techniques on hillsides all contribute to<br />
soil erosion <strong>an</strong>d soil loss. Some <strong>of</strong> this<br />
soil ends up <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>l<strong>an</strong>d water bodies<br />

way to <strong>the</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e environment. Pollution<br />

4.4.4 Improv<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess practices<br />
Underst<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g both <strong>the</strong> need <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />
opportunities for adaptation to climate<br />
<strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> is fast becom<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong> essential<br />
requirement <strong>of</strong> both governments <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong><br />
private sector <strong>of</strong> vulnerable countries <strong>an</strong>d<br />
makes good bus<strong>in</strong>ess sense. No matter<br />
how big or how small, bus<strong>in</strong>esses c<strong>an</strong> also<br />
do <strong>the</strong>ir bit to tackle climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>.<br />
� M<strong>an</strong>age risk. As extreme wea<strong>the</strong>r<br />
events <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>tense natural hazards<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly become a part <strong>of</strong> life <strong>in</strong><br />
some <strong>UKOTs</strong>, bus<strong>in</strong>esses <strong>of</strong> all sizes<br />
will have to look carefully at <strong>the</strong>ir exposure<br />
to risk <strong>an</strong>d take proactive measures<br />
to reduce it. This could me<strong>an</strong><br />
tak<strong>in</strong>g steps to secure equipment, vital<br />
records, <strong>an</strong>d build<strong>in</strong>gs dur<strong>in</strong>g cyclones<br />
or tak<strong>in</strong>g measures to ensure consistency<br />
<strong>of</strong> adequate water supplies<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g periods <strong>of</strong> shortage. Reduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
risk also me<strong>an</strong>s adher<strong>in</strong>g to build<strong>in</strong>g<br />
codes, comply<strong>in</strong>g with environmental<br />
regulations <strong>an</strong>d legislation <strong>an</strong>d not<br />
tak<strong>in</strong>g short cuts. Much c<strong>an</strong> be done at<br />
<strong>the</strong> design stage to m<strong>in</strong>imise risk, from<br />
choices about build<strong>in</strong>g materials to<br />
where to site build<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>an</strong>d even architectural<br />
features.<br />
� Increase energy efficiency <strong>an</strong>d use<br />
renewable energy sources. Bus<strong>in</strong>esses<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>UKOTs</strong> are not likely to face a cap on<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir emissions <strong>an</strong>y time soon, but <strong>the</strong><br />
sav<strong>in</strong>gs that come from <strong>in</strong>creased<br />
energy efficiency <strong>an</strong>d from replac<strong>in</strong>g<br />
fossil fuels with alternative sources <strong>of</strong><br />
energy will make a difference to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
bottom l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> medium to long-term.<br />
