Increase <strong>in</strong> sea temperature.<br />

Sea level rise will adversely affect nest<strong>in</strong>g beaches <strong>an</strong>d could cause a drop <strong>in</strong> sea<br />

turtle nest<strong>in</strong>g success due to nest <strong>in</strong>undation.<br />

Ch<strong>an</strong>ges <strong>in</strong> regional seasonal ra<strong>in</strong>fall patterns could adv<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> spread <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>vasive pl<strong>an</strong>t species <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>crease erosion.<br />

Fish stocks <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> fish<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry are at <strong>the</strong> highest risk from climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>.<br />

Ch<strong>an</strong>ges <strong>in</strong> air <strong>an</strong>d sea temperatures could <strong>in</strong>fluence wea<strong>the</strong>r patterns <strong>an</strong>d<br />

cause disruption to established w<strong>in</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d ra<strong>in</strong>fall patterns, lead<strong>in</strong>g to floods,<br />

drought, <strong>an</strong>d/or soil erosion.<br />

Research po<strong>in</strong>ts to a strong warm<strong>in</strong>g trend <strong>in</strong> air temperature (2°C over 60<br />

years) <strong>an</strong>d a slight decrease <strong>in</strong> ra<strong>in</strong>fall. Over time, <strong>the</strong> latter could have<br />

implications for local water supplies.<br />

Altitud<strong>in</strong>al shifts <strong>in</strong> vegetation zones.<br />

Currently identifiable ecological imbal<strong>an</strong>ces could become even more marked.<br />

Cooler, less sal<strong>in</strong>e water may affect distribution <strong>an</strong>d abund<strong>an</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>shore fauna <strong>an</strong>d flora.<br />

There is need for more research <strong>an</strong>d data ga<strong>the</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> climate<br />

<strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Falkl<strong>an</strong>ds. To date, little is known about <strong>the</strong> effects <strong>of</strong> climate<br />

<strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> on pl<strong>an</strong>t communities or about what it me<strong>an</strong>s for whale <strong>an</strong>d dolph<strong>in</strong><br />

communities.<br />

There has been little monitor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> climate-l<strong>in</strong>ked <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>s on Trist<strong>an</strong> da Cunha<br />

<strong>an</strong>d Gough Isl<strong>an</strong>d, so <strong>the</strong> full extent <strong>of</strong> impacts is unknown. However, <strong>an</strong>ecdotal<br />

evidence <strong>an</strong>d observation <strong>of</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> trends po<strong>in</strong>t to <strong>the</strong> several likely <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>s.<br />

Increased <strong>in</strong>vasiveness <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduced species due to warmer temperatures.<br />

Species <strong>in</strong>troduced from South Africa, especially <strong>in</strong>vertebrates <strong>an</strong>d pl<strong>an</strong>ts, that<br />

at one time would not survive, may establish <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

Warmer temperatures could lead to <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> mouse population<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> threat to species like <strong>the</strong> Trist<strong>an</strong> albatross (Diomedea dabbenena),<br />

which is already considered ‘critically end<strong>an</strong>gered’.<br />

There may be a potential risk to <strong>the</strong> five seamounts <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>an</strong>ds’ exclusive<br />

economic zone.<br />

Coastal areas are likely to be affected if <strong>the</strong>re is a rise <strong>in</strong> seawater, as it could<br />

encroach on <strong>the</strong> native habitat forc<strong>in</strong>g species that breed <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> coastal zone,<br />

such as <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn rockhopper pengu<strong>in</strong> (Eudyptes chrysocome moseleyi) <strong>an</strong>d
