Infrastructure: Most <strong>UKOTs</strong> have a high<br />
concentration <strong>of</strong> critical <strong>in</strong>frastructure<br />
(ports, airports, houses <strong>an</strong>d bus<strong>in</strong>esses) <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> coastal zone. Flood<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d physical<br />
damage may lead to closure <strong>of</strong> roads, airports<br />
<strong>an</strong>d bridges. The result<strong>in</strong>g disruption<br />
is also likely to affect communications as<br />
well as o<strong>the</strong>r key dependent sectors <strong>an</strong>d<br />
services, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g tourism, agriculture,<br />
health care delivery <strong>an</strong>d market supplies<br />
(Mimura et al., 2007).<br />
Coastal <strong>an</strong>d mar<strong>in</strong>e resources: Oce<strong>an</strong>s<br />
<strong>an</strong>d seas are import<strong>an</strong>t ecosystems <strong>in</strong> all<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>UKOTs</strong>. The goods <strong>an</strong>d services that<br />
coastal <strong>an</strong>d mar<strong>in</strong>e ecosystems provide<br />
<strong>UKOTs</strong> are critical to <strong>the</strong> well-be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
people <strong>an</strong>d economies.<br />
Coral reefs <strong>an</strong>d sea grass beds are import<strong>an</strong>t<br />
nurseries for fisheries, for example,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d beaches are breed<strong>in</strong>g grounds for<br />
several mar<strong>in</strong>e species, such as turtles <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Caribbe<strong>an</strong> <strong>an</strong>d Pacific <strong>an</strong>d seals <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Antarctic <strong>an</strong>d sub-Antarctic. Coral reefs<br />
are <strong>an</strong> extremely diverse ecosystem. Globally,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y cover a mere 0.2 per cent <strong>of</strong><br />
oce<strong>an</strong> floor, but <strong>the</strong>y are home to 25 per<br />
cent <strong>of</strong> its species (Roberts, 2003 cited <strong>in</strong><br />
Grimsditch et al., 2006), <strong>the</strong>y are also part<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tourism product that m<strong>an</strong>y <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Caribbe<strong>an</strong> <strong>UKOTs</strong> market. They generate<br />
<strong>the</strong> f<strong>in</strong>e white s<strong>an</strong>d that is part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
appeal <strong>of</strong> tropical beaches <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong>ir abund<strong>an</strong>t<br />
mar<strong>in</strong>e life <strong>an</strong>d structural formations<br />
attract snorkellers <strong>an</strong>d divers.<br />
M<strong>an</strong>groves <strong>an</strong>d o<strong>the</strong>r wetl<strong>an</strong>ds are <strong>an</strong><br />
import<strong>an</strong>t part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natural defences <strong>of</strong><br />
Healthy coral reefs support much<br />
biodiversity <strong>in</strong> our oce<strong>an</strong>s, but <strong>the</strong>y are<br />
vulnerable to impacts <strong>of</strong> climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong>.<br />

several <strong>UKOTs</strong> <strong>an</strong>d play a role <strong>in</strong> water<br />
quality m<strong>an</strong>agement <strong>an</strong>d erosion control.<br />
They are also wildlife habitats <strong>an</strong>d<br />
breed<strong>in</strong>g grounds for some mar<strong>in</strong>e<br />
species.<br />
<strong>Climate</strong> <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> <strong>an</strong>d sea level rise contribute<br />
to coastal erosion, l<strong>an</strong>dward <strong>in</strong>trusion<br />
<strong>of</strong> seawater, flood<strong>in</strong>g (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
higher storm surge flood<strong>in</strong>g), damage to<br />
coral reefs from bleach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d disease,<br />
destruction <strong>of</strong> m<strong>an</strong>groves <strong>an</strong>d sea grass<br />
Box 7. Possible <strong>in</strong>tensification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> El Niño Sou<strong>the</strong>rn Oscillation<br />
The natural pattern <strong>of</strong> El Niño/ La Niña events appears to be ch<strong>an</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g. The evidence is<br />
not yet conclusive, but it seems that s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> 1970s <strong>the</strong> events are becom<strong>in</strong>g stronger<br />
<strong>an</strong>d more frequent, with little return to normal conditions <strong>in</strong> between. <strong>Climate</strong> scientists<br />
are beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g to look at <strong>the</strong> relationship between this phenomenon <strong>an</strong>d global warm<strong>in</strong>g<br />
to ascerta<strong>in</strong> if <strong>an</strong>d to what extent hum<strong>an</strong>-<strong>in</strong>duced climate <strong>ch<strong>an</strong>ge</strong> may be play<strong>in</strong>g a role<br />
<strong>in</strong> this. Intensification <strong>of</strong> ENSO would have climate <strong>an</strong>d economic implications globally,<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>UKOTs</strong>.<br />
