Box 2. The UK Overseas Territories <strong>in</strong> Brief<br />
The 14 United K<strong>in</strong>gdom’s Overseas Territories are a diverse group<strong>in</strong>g. They r<strong>an</strong>ge<br />
from <strong>the</strong> t<strong>in</strong>y Pacific isl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>of</strong> Pitcairn with 47 <strong>in</strong>habit<strong>an</strong>ts <strong>an</strong>d a fragile subsistence<br />
economy based on fish<strong>in</strong>g, horticulture, <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong> h<strong>an</strong>dicrafts, to Bermuda just<br />
north <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Caribbe<strong>an</strong>, which has a population <strong>of</strong> more th<strong>an</strong> 62,000 <strong>an</strong>d is one <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> world's major f<strong>in</strong><strong>an</strong>cial centres. They also <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> Sovereign Base Areas on<br />
Cyprus, which are military bases.<br />
The Overseas Territories are: Anguilla; British Antarctic Territory; Bermuda; British<br />
Indi<strong>an</strong> Oce<strong>an</strong> Territory; British Virg<strong>in</strong> Isl<strong>an</strong>ds; Caym<strong>an</strong> Isl<strong>an</strong>ds; Falkl<strong>an</strong>d Isl<strong>an</strong>ds;<br />
Gibraltar; Montserrat; St. Helena <strong>an</strong>d Dependencies (Ascension Isl<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d Trist<strong>an</strong><br />
da Cunha); Turks <strong>an</strong>d Caicos Isl<strong>an</strong>ds; Pitcairn Isl<strong>an</strong>d; South Georgia <strong>an</strong>d South<br />
S<strong>an</strong>dwich Isl<strong>an</strong>ds; <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus.<br />
The British Antarctic Territory (BAT)<br />
Location: The sector <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Antarctic below latitude<br />
60°S, between longitudes 20°W <strong>an</strong>d 80°W.<br />

Size: Total area <strong>of</strong> 1,709,400 km 2 .<br />
<strong>Climate</strong>: The coldest, driest <strong>an</strong>d w<strong>in</strong>diest cont<strong>in</strong>ent<br />
<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. The average <strong>an</strong>nual temperature at <strong>the</strong><br />
South Pole is -49°C.<br />
Topography: Only 1.4% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> BAT’s surface is ice-free. The rema<strong>in</strong>der is covered by<br />
a perm<strong>an</strong>ent ice sheet <strong>of</strong> up to three km thick.<br />
Biodiversity: On l<strong>an</strong>d, although vegetation is sparse, <strong>the</strong>re are m<strong>an</strong>y types <strong>of</strong> lichen,<br />
moss <strong>an</strong>d algae. In <strong>the</strong> surround<strong>in</strong>g seas, vast amounts <strong>of</strong> krill provide <strong>the</strong> basis for<br />
rich mar<strong>in</strong>e life. This <strong>in</strong>cludes whales, seals <strong>an</strong>d very large numbers <strong>of</strong> birds<br />
especially petrels <strong>an</strong>d pengu<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>in</strong>habit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>an</strong>ds <strong>an</strong>d coastal areas <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Pen<strong>in</strong>sula. 1<br />
Ma<strong>in</strong> economic activities: There is no economic activity <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> BAT; however, tourism<br />
is grow<strong>in</strong>g. The United K<strong>in</strong>gdom Antarctic Heritage Trust (UKAHT) has a team at Port<br />
Lockroy each season. This historic site usually attracts about 6,000 visitors a year.<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>formation: There is no <strong>in</strong>digenous population <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Territory. The United<br />
K<strong>in</strong>gdom’s presence is through <strong>the</strong> British Antarctic Survey (BAS), which ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>s<br />
two perm<strong>an</strong>ently m<strong>an</strong>ned scientific stations (at Halley <strong>an</strong>d Ro<strong>the</strong>ra) <strong>an</strong>d three<br />
summer-only stations (at Fossil Bluff on Alex<strong>an</strong>der Isl<strong>an</strong>d, Sky Blue at <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Antarctic Pen<strong>in</strong>sula <strong>an</strong>d Signy <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> South Orkney Isl<strong>an</strong>ds).<br />
South Georgia<br />
Location: An isolated sub-Antarctic isl<strong>an</strong>d about 1,390 km south east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Falkl<strong>an</strong>d<br />
Isl<strong>an</strong>ds <strong>an</strong>d about 2,150 km east <strong>of</strong> Tierra del Fuego. In addition to <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong> isl<strong>an</strong>d<br />
<strong>the</strong>re are smaller isl<strong>an</strong>ds, islets <strong>an</strong>d rocks.<br />
